These two volumes are in memory of Prof. Lishan Kang, the ISICA 2009 Honorary General Chair, who was a leadingfigureinthefieldsofdomaindecompositionmethodsandcomputational intelligence. ISICA 2009 successfully attracted over 300 submissions. Through rigorous reviews,58 high-quality papers were included in LNCS 5821,while the other 54 paperswerecollectedinCCIS51.ISICAconferencesareoneofthe firstseriesof internationalconferencesoncomputationalintelligencethatcombineelementsof learning, adaptation, evolutionandfuzzy logictocreateprogramsasalternative solutions to artificial intelligence. The last three ISICA proceedings have been accepted in the Index to Scientific and Technical Proceedings (ISTP) and/or Engineering Information (EI). FollowingthesuccessofthepastthreeISICAevents,ISICA2009madegood progress in the analysis and design of newly developed methods in the field of computationalintelligence.ISICA2009featuredthemostup-to-dateresearchin analysisandtheoryofevolutionaryalgorithms, neuralnetworkarchitecturesand learning, fuzzy logic and control, predictive modeling for robust classification, swarmintelligence, evolutionarysystemdesign, evolutionaryimageanalysisand signal processing, and computational intelligence in engineering design. ISICA 2009 provided a venue to foster technical exchanges, renew everlasting friend- ships, and establish new connections. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we would like to thank warmly the sponsors, China University of Geosciences and Hubei Normal University, who helped in one way or another to achieve our goals for the conference. We wish to express our appreciation to Springer for publishing the proceedings of ISICA 2009. We also wish to acknowledge the dedication and commitment of the LNCS and CCIS editorial staff. We would like to thank the authors for submittingtheirwork, aswellastheProgramCommitteemembersandreviewers for their enthusiasm, time andexpertise. The invaluable help ofactive members fromtheOrganizingCommittee, includingJiaoeJiang,DajunRong,HaoZhang and Xiaowen Jin, in setting up and maintaining the online submission systems, assigningthepaperstothereviewers,andpreparingthecamera-readyversionof the proceedings is highly appreciated. We would like to thank them personally for helping make ISICA 2009 a success.
