INDEX TO SCIENTIFIC NAMES 1 7 18 282 284 229 376 378 379 391 393 PREFACE Shell collee:ing as a hobby has had a remarkable resurgence in he last few years. To a considerable extent this hes been brought about by an increasing interest in ocean life and a deep concern for anything to do ‘with our fragile natural enviranment. More particularly, however, sis. due to the availability ofa host of remarkable, leng-lostor newly discov- ‘ered species of mollusks now being obtained by various methods, such asnetting and diving, from exotic parts of the globe. Although sciesice hs not kept pace with these recent discoveries, amateur collectors are well aware that a new Golden Age of conchology has dawned. This situation underlines the need for good shell dent fica- ticn guides. Some excellent regional shell books compiled by profes- sional conchologists are available for some ateas, suchas New Zealand, Hawaii, and Nor‘h America, but no baok has given a useful and relable ‘overview of most af the world’s better known marine shells. About 30,000 species of marine mollusks are known. Thousands are less than ha fan inch in size, even in the adult stage; many hundreds are confined to the grext depths of the oceans. Qurbook concentrates on all the others. Their inclusion here is based on several factors: attractive: ness, desirability, rarity, and avai ability. Included are inost species Le: longing to popular groups, such as the cones, volutes, cowries, :murexes, scallops, and thorny oysters, At the same time we have not overlooked periwinkles, oysters, limpets, and other less attractive groups. We have attempted to strke a balance between the popular and the less popula Intended primarily for the amateur shell collector, our book also serves the scientific community. It contains photographs of several hun- dreds of type specimens from museums and private collections, tose unique specimens to which scientists must refer when the exact identity (ofa species must be established. As such specimens are seldom allowed, to leave the institutions in which they are housed, the publication of theirportraits here'n may save someone considerable time and traveling expense, The photographs and the brie‘ accompanying texts provide a cuick guide to those marine species the amateur conchalogst is most kely to encounter while doing fieldwork, exchanging, or pucchasing from com= mercial sources. The’ combinee classification and bibliography, ar- ranged by families and by geographical regions, will guide him to more sophisticated monographs and textbooks. R. TUCKER ABKOI 5. PETER DANCE
