The fact that this Special Series is averaging the publication of one book per year since that time is testament to the growing academic importance of the Philosophy of Peace and to the emergence of a mutigenerational scholarly community committed to advancing the field. Only a few volumes in this Special Series have focused specifically on issues of community. Community, Diversity, and Difference: Implications for Peace (VIBS 127, 2000), edited by Alison Bailey and Paula J. Smithka, ad- dressed themes of difference and community and the ideal of global commu- nity. Positive Peace: Reflections on Peace Education, Nonviolence, and So- cial Change (VIBS 217, 2010), edited by Andrew Fitz-Gibbon, focuses on the requirements for positive peace which is an essential component for just communities. Danielle Poe, the editor of the present volume titled Communi- ties of Peace: Confronting Injustice and Creating Justice, extends these ef- forts by bringing together eight essays that explore various facets of the quest for just communities. Several of the authors (William C. Gay, Tanya Loughead, and Fitz- Gibbon) address specific needs for and in a just community, and I note a few of their suggestions. Biological diversity is needed in ecological communities, and cultural diversity is needed in human communities. The desire for a just community needs to be cultivated, and love can play an important role in con- structing a just community. Other authors (Wendy C. Hamblet, Arnold L. Farr, Matthew Pianalto, Courtland Lewis, and V. Denise James) address techniques and methods for addressing structures and practices of injustice that continue during the quest for just communities. Among the techniques and methods proposed, I shall mention a few of the most significant ones. Efforts need to be made to find just methods for responding to unjust behavior. Responses need to be devel- oped that address residual systems of privilege, and means need to be found to identify and assist the least advantaged in a community. In order to main- tain just communities ways need to be found for tolerating remaining differ- ences. Furthermore, methods need to be found for transforming negative emotions into active nonviolent responses. Taken together, these essays provide an indication of the many chal- lenges to be faced in seeking to create and then to maintain just communities. At the same time, these essays also provide ground breaking proposals for seeking to create just communities and for addressing residual unjust struc- tures and practices. These contributors provide the basis for further theoreti- cal reflection and practical action. Achievement of just communities involves formidable challenges, but these authors give us hope that such efforts need not be viewed as quixotic.
