With more than 1,000 presenters, this year's conference is the largest to date. These student researchers, representing 22 of the public higher education institutions in Massachusetts, have come together for a day of sharing and learning to deliver presentations among peers and the public. The students exhibit not only their original research, but also their drive and effort to better understand aspects of our world. In fields ranging from accounting to microbiology to women's studies, students are conducting meaningful research and contributing knowledge to their fields. In recognition of the twentieth anniversary milestone and the continued growth in student participation, two elements have been added to foster development of key skills for young leaders. E-poster boards have been introduced this year. Be sure to view these interactive presentations during today's research conference. In addition, the afternoon Networking Reception (2:30-3:00 p.m. in the Campus Center Auditorium) offers students and faculty a scheduled break and a chance to connect while sharing ideas and research interests. The Undergraduate Research Conference is co-sponsored by Commonwealth Honors College and the Massachusetts System of Public Higher Education, comprised of the University of Massachusetts campuses and the commonwealth's community colleges and state universities. 6 Table of Contents KEYNOTE SPEAKER "Lessons from Inquiry" Paul Williamson '74 is the senior director of clinical research and development and product development at Janssen R&D, part of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies. His organization's current focus is on vision loss from retinal degeneration. Dr. Williamson received a bachelor of science degree with a major in mathematics and statistics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He is a board-certified internist and rheumatologist. Dr. Williamson joined the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies in 2001 after maintaining a clinical practice in rheumatology. His presentation, "Lessons from Inquiry," examines how the unmet needs of society present wonderful opportunities for the inquisitive. Thoughtful inquiry, Williamson says, involves a sequence: observation, questions, investigations and finally solutions. The advent of biopharmaceutical products that satisfy unmet medical needs has followed this sequence. Although future needs will present new challenges and require novel solutions, lessons learned from inquiry may be timeless in their importance. 7 Table of Contents ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS We would like to acknowledge all of the faculty We would also like to give special recognition to members who volunteered their time and expertise Conference Coordinator Letha Gayle-Brissett, to review abstracts and have given invaluable Conference Assistant Danielle Hecht, Meredith guidance to student presenters.
