Adams, 1856),andwe defendtheviewthatthespellingLaiocochlisistheonethatshouldberuledtobecorrect. Altena (1954, p. 47) introduced Laiochochlis(sic) woodiasa replacement namefor the preoccupied Cerithium granosum Wood, 1848. Gilbert (1958a, p. 9) separated Laiocochlis (sic) sinistrata (Nyst, 1835), with a teleoconch sculpture of only spiral cords, fromL.woodiMtena, 1954,withateleoconchsculptureofbothspiralcordsand axial riblets forming almost square reticulation. He also compared two Recent Norwegian shells and found them to be identical with L. sinistrata. Gilbert listed L. sinistratafromtheLuchtbal,KattendykandAustruweelsands,allof'Plio-Pleistocene' ('Scaldisien')age.Thefaunalassemblagesofthesesands(Gilbert, 1957, 1958b)appear to indicate reworked deposits but they do contain cold water species now living in northern Europe; Calliostomaoccidentalisislisted ascommon. Gilbert(1958a)desig- nated a neotype ofCerithium sinistratum Nyst, 1835 (p. 28) in the collection ofthe InstitutRoyaldesSciencesNaturellesdeBelgique. We have examined Plio-Pleistocene Laiocochlis from British as well as Belgian deposits, and about 200 Recent specimens from the Northeast Atlantic. We are not certainiftheBritish(L.woodi,i.e.C.granosumWood)andBelgian(L.sinistrata)fossils are specifically distinct, but the Recent material is certainly conspecific with Belgian fossilL.sinistrata. TriforismacandraeaeA.Adams, 1856and T.niveaM.Sars, 1859are juniorsubjective synonyms, asisL.pommeraniaeDunker& Metzger, 1874. Griindel (1980, fig. 34) figured one oftwo syntypes ofL.pommeraniaein thecollection ofthe ZoologischesMuseum, Berlin. BulletinofZoologicalNomenclature48(4)December1991 323 Article32c(ii)oftheCodestatesthat'incorrect transliteration orlatinization ... are not to be considered inadvertent errors'. Consequently, we would rather follow Kobelt's 1875 statement (see BZN 48: 27, para. 3) that the spelling Laiocochlis was intended byDunker& Metzger. Inviewoftheusageo^LaiocochlisorLaiochochlisby manymodern European,Japaneseand Russian authors, weconcludethatstabilizing the spelling Laiocochlis would serve best the interest ofnomenclatural stability. We believe that theCommissionshould not beconcerned with thevalid nameofthetype speciesofthegenusbutinanycaseproposal(3)on BZN48: 28shouldbedropped. Additionalreferences Altena, CO. van R. 1954.
