An integral part of the Columbia- Presbyterian Medical Center, we work closely with our sister schools,medicine,nursing,anddentistry. IntheUnitedStatesandabroad,thesearedemandingtimesforthe healthfield. Publichealth,whichearlierinitshistorywaschiefly concerned with sanitation and the control of epidemics, now addressesacomplexrangeofhealth-relatedissues,suchasAIDS, health care financing, environmental contamination, adolescent pregnancy, and health care for the homeless, indigent, and uninsured. And while much of CSPH's attention is devoted to health issues in NewYork City and the U.S., we also work on significantglobalconcerns:populationgrowth,internationalhealth caresystems,women'shealthandhumanrights,familyplanningin thedevelopingworld,andinfantandmaternalmortality.Manyof ourfaculu',workingwiththeirstudents,aretheleadingexpertson thesevitalissues. Morethanever,thebroadfieldofpublichealthneedswell-trained professionals.Asthenationandtheworldwrestlewiththerealirv- oflimitedhealthcareresources,efficiencyrequiresgreaterutiliza- tionofpublichealth'sapproachtopreventionandinterventionat the population andenvironmental levels.
