To fosterandsustainColumbia's connectiontothePresbyterianChurch (USA),the ecumenicalchurch,thegreaterAtlantacommunity,nationalandglobalcommunities. ABrief History ofthe Seminary Fromits foundinginLexington,Georgia,in 1828,Columbiahasbeencommittedtotraining persons forleadershipinthechurchofJesus Christ.Throughoutitshistory,Columbiahas nurturedandhasbeennurturedbythePresbyterianChurchintheSouth;thisconnection continuestobeacherishedtradition.WhileColumbianowenjoysanoutstandingnationaland internationalreputation,italso faithfullyupholdsitshistoriccovenantswiththeSynods of LivingWatersandSouthAtlantic.In 1830,Columbia,SouthCarolina,becamethefirst permanentlocationoftheseminary.TheschoolbecamepopularlyknownasColumbia TheologicalSeminary,andthenamewas formallyacceptedin 1925. Thedecadeofthe 1920's sawashiftinpopulationthroughouttheSoutheast.Atlantawas becomingacommercialandindustrialcenterandgrowingrapidlyinits culturalandeducational opportunities.Between 1925and 1930,PresidentRichardT. Gillespieprovidedleadershipthat ledtothedevelopmentofthepresentfacilities onafifty-seven-acretractinDecatur,Georgia. BecausetheearlyyearsinDecaturweredifficult,the futureoftheinstitutionbecameuncertain. Columbia,however,experiencedsubstantialgrowthundertheleadershipofDr.J.McDowell Richards,whowaselectedpresidentin 1932andledtheseminaryforalmostfourdecades. In 1971,Dr. C. BentonKlineservedfiveyearsaspresident. InJanuary 1976,Dr.J.Davison Philipsbecamepresident;heretiredelevenyearslater. Dr.DouglasW. Oldenburgbecamethe seventhpresidentinJanuary 1987 andDr.LauraMendenhalltheeighthpresidentin2000.In July2009,Dr. StephenHaynerbecameColumbia'sninthpresidentafterservingasaprofessor. Degree Programs and Admissions Degree Programs Columbia's sealcarriesamottowhichconsists oftheGreekwords forpastorsandteachers. Thesewordsaretaken fromthelettertotheEphesians: "Thegiftshegavewerethatsome wouldbeapostles,someprophets,someevangelists, somepastorsandteachers,toequipthe saints fortheworkofministry, forbuildingupthebodyofChrist" (Ephesians4:11-12NRSV). Sinceitsinception,Columbiahasseenitsroleas trainingpersons forleadershipinthechurch byofferingcourses ofstudyleadingtobothbasicandadvanceddegrees.TheMasterofDivinity (MDiv) andtheMasterofArtsinPracticalTheology(MAPT) arefirstprofessionaldegreesin theologicaleducation.TheMasterofArtsinTheologicalStudies (MAfTS]),abasictheological degree,is academicratherthanprofessionalinorientation.Advanceddegreesincludethe MasterofTheology(ThM),theDoctorofMinistry(DMin),theDoctorofEducationalMinistry (DEdMin),andtheDoctorofTheologyinPastoralCareandCounseling(ThD).Womenand menfromalldenominations areeligibletoapplyforanyofColumbia'sdegrees. Master of Divinity Introduction TheMasterofDivinitydegreeis offeredasabasictheologicaldegree forthosewhoseek toserveasthepastors,prophets,evangelists,teachers,andotherleaders ofthechurchof JesusChrist. ThecurriculumofferedtoMDivstudentsemerges fromthe seminary'sidentityasacommunity ofmemoryandhope.TheseminaryfindsitsidentityaspartofthepeopleofGodstretching backthousandsofyears.Itthusaims toleadstudents toafreshcriticalappropriationofthe Christiantraditionforthemselvesandforthesakeofthechurchtheyserve.Columbiaisalsoa communitythatfindsitsidentityinhope,inthepromisesofGod,intheworldthatGodwill bringabout,andintheopportunities stillahead fortheworkofthechurchintheMissioDei. Consequently,theMDivcurriculumalsoaimstonurturestudents'hopeandengagetheir imaginations formissioninachurchandworldincrisis. TheChristianministryneedspersonswhoarepossessedwithadeep,informed,andpersonal faithandwhoareequippedwith skillsandimaginationtoleadthepeopleofGodinacts of compassion,proclamation,praise,confession,celebration,justice,reconciliation,andhealing. TeachingandlearningatColumbiaexistforthepurposeofequippingandformingthepeople whoequip thesaintstoengageintheworkofministry. Length ofProgram TheMDivcurriculumisdesignedsothatafull-timestudentcancompletetherequirements for thedegreeinthree fullyears.Astudent'sprogrammaybelengthenedbyavarietyoffactors, suchasparticipationininternshipsortakingareducedloadinanygivensemester.Allstudents mustcompletetheirworkwithinsixyears fromthedateofmatriculation. Advising Intheologicaleducation,students findthatitisimportanttointegratetheirstudies and experiencesintheirownlives. Facultymembersaidthisprocessofintegrationandformation byservingasadvisers,assistingstudentsintheircourseselectionseachterm.Asaresultof conversationwiththeiradvisers,studentsmakecourse selectionsthattakeintoaccount areasofpastexperience,identifiedweaknesses,andtheassessmentsofteachersand ministrysupervisors. Earlyinthe firstyearofstudies,studentsundergoanindividual supervisedministryassessmentwiththeDirectorofContextualEducation.Thedirector makesajointrecommendationtothestudentandadviseraboutthestudent'scontextual learningaboutministry. CalendarandCreditSystem AcademicworkfortheMDivisofferedintwolongtermsinthe fallandthespring. ThecalendaralsoincludesaJanuaryintensivetermandasummertermdesignedforGreek languageschoolandsupervisedministryexperiences.Eachlongtermconsistsof6weeksof classes,amidtermexamandassessmentweek,another6weeksofclasses,andafinalexam week.Theexamweeksenable students tocompletetheworkforhalf-termcoursesandto finishreadingassignments forcoursesthatcontinuethroughtheterm. Courses thatmeetforthewholetermareassigned3credithours.Thosemeetingforhalfthe termaregiven 1.5credithours.Thehalf-termcoursesallowstudents totakemoresubjectsina giventermwithoutincreasingthenumberofclassestheywillcarrysimultaneously.Becauseof thetimecommitmentinvolved,GreekSchoolandSupervisedMinistry210eachearn6credit hours. Studentsmaytakeuptoamaximumof12credithoursinalongterm.
