Earlier he had been Professor of New Testament Theology at the University of Gottingen. A contributor to Kittel's Theological Dic tionary of the New Testament, he has also published Miirtyrer und Gottesknecht (1955), Israel und die Christenheit (1960), Das Argernis des Kreuzes (1969), and, in English, History of the Suffering and Death of Jesus Christ (1967).
