Youprobablyrealizealreadyhowimportantthearticlesarein English.Notonlyaretheyamongthecommonestwords inEnglish, theyareoftenvitalforsuccessfulcommunication.Theytellyouwhat assumptionspeoplemakeabouttheirlistenerswhentheyspeak. Ifa strangercomesuptoyouonauniversitycampusandasks'Where's thebookstore?',theythinkthereisonlyonethere,andtheyassume youthinkthistoo.Changingonearticleforanother,orleavingone out,canoftencause misunderstanding,forexampleifyousay'Ilike English'(thelanguage),whenyoumean'Ilikethe English' (the people).
