Edison Community College's Mission Statement Recognizingtheworthanddignityoftheindividualandsociety'sneedforeducatedcitizens,themissionofEdison I Community College is to provide those post-secondary learning experiences necessary to assist individuals in determiningandreachingavarietyofeducational,personal,andcareergoals.Consistentwiththeconceptsofcommunity college education and dedication to high standards of achievement, Edison Community College fulfills its mission throughthefollowingspecific endeavors: •Collegecourses and programs atthe freshman and sophomore levels offered forpersonal developmentand/or transferforcontinuation ofundergraduate studies. • Post-secondarycareer-orientedcoursesandprogramswhichprovidestudentswith marketableskillsandexpertise in selected technical areas. • Recreationalandleisureprogramswhichenablestudentstoenrichtheirlivesphysically,socially,culturally,and intellectually. • Developmental instruction to assiststudents in pursuing thenecessary skills to attain theireducational goals. • Leadership as aneducational andcultural resourcein serving thediverse and developing needs ofthedistrict. Philosophy of General Education ThepurposeofthegeneraleducationprogramatEdisonCommunityCollegeistoprovidestudentswithacommon setoflearningexperiences winch will helpequip them toparticipateeffectively in oursociety. Theseexperiences are broad enough and includeenoughoptions to allowtheindividual studenttoprepare forthefuturein accordancewith individualabilities,needsandinterests.Everyeffortismadetoincorporatethevaluesofgeneraleducationintoallcollege programs. Becausewearelivinginaperiodofrapid andcontinuingchange,theintentofthegeneraleducationprogramisto help students developtheability to think;to solveproblems and to learn general principles ratherthan isolatedbitsof knowledge ortraining which may soon become obsolete. Theelements which help to develop and enhance essential aspects oftheindividual'spersonality are: 1 Anawarenessandknowledgeandappreciationofthephysicalworldinwinchwelive,characteristicsofhuman behavior, problems ofhumanexistence, and 2. An acquisition of the skills necessary for self-expression and creativeness, and for active involvement as concerned and thinkingcitizens. Experimentationandinnovation,processesforwhichcommunitycollegeshaveuniquecapabilities,areencouraged within ourowninstitution. Themeansbywinchtheseobjectivesmaybeaccomplishedareinnovativeanddirectedtowardthefuture.Standard orconventional typesofeducationarereexamined and revised. Experiments must betried and acceptedordiscarded. Theprocessofteachingandlearningisadynamiconeandeveryavailablelearningtoolandmethodmustbeconsidered and employed wheredesirableand feasible. Programs,activitiesandfacilitiesofEdisonCommunityCollegeareavailabletoallonanon-discriminatorybasis, without regardtorace,color,creed, religion,sex,age, handicap,maritalstatusornationalorigin. ThecollegeisanequalaccessEqual OpportunityEmployer. Questionspertaining toeducationalequity, equalopportunityorequalaccessshouldbeaddressedto theDirectorofHumanResources. History EdisonCommunityCollegecelebratesits32ndyearofservicetoSouthwestFloridathisyear.Sincethefirststudentswere admittedtoEdisoninthefallof1962,thecollegehasenrolledmorethan 100,000studentsincreditcourses.Associatein Arts and Associate in Science degreesareoffered atEdison as well as one-yearcertificate programs. I FromitsfirstquartersintheoldGwyneInstituteBuildingindowntownFt.Myers,Edisonmovedtoitspermanent80-acre campusin SouthLeeCountyinJune 1965.Followingamasterplandesignedtoprovideforgrowthandfutureneeds,theLee Countycampusnow includeseightpermanentstructuresandtheBarbaraB. MannPerformingArtsHalltomeettheneedsof studentsandagrowingcommunity.TheUniversityofSouthFloridaatFortMyers islocatedadjacenttoEdison'sLeeCounty Campus, offering expanded educational opportunitiesto studentsatboth institutions. Edison's CollierCounty Campus opened in March of 1992. Thebeautiful new campus is located on a50-acre sitenear S.R.951andRattlesnakeHammockRoad,ineastNaples.Planningisnowunderwayforathirdpermanentcampus,theCharlotte County Campus, in PuntaGorda. EdisonreceivesitsfundingprimarilyfromtheStateofFlorida.Studentfeesandfederalgrantsprovideapproximatelyone- thirdofthecollege budget, with individualandprivategrantssupplementing thenearlytwo-thirdsprovidedby statesources. TheEdisonCommunityCollegeEndowmentCorporation,Inc.providesmorethan$500,000peryearinaidtoEdisonstudents andprograms. EdisonCommunityCollegeisgovernedbyitsDistrictBoardofTrusteescomposedofninerepresentativesofLee,Charlotte, Collier,HendryandGladescounties.Themembersareappointedtofour-yeartermsbytheGovernor ofFlorida.Currentlyabout 350professionalandsupportstaffmembersprovidethefull-timeinstructionalandsupportservicesforthemorethan9,000credit and 10,000non-credit students whoparticipateinEdison coursesand programs each year. Lee County Campus TheLeeCountyCampusislocatedonan80-acresitebetweenCollegeParkwayandCypressLakeDriveinsouthLeeCounty. Courses ofstudyleadingtoAssociateinArts, Associate inScience,orCertificateprograms,aswellasnon-creditContinuing EducationclassesareofferedattheLeeCountyCampus.Thefirstpermanentlocationofthecollege, theLeeCountyCampus, i was constructed in 1965. The campus is made up ofone and two-story classroom buildings including: library; bookstore; cafeteria; student center; auditorium; gymnasium and physical education facilities and specialized laboratories for science, computerscience,nursing,alliedhealthandcollegepreparatoryclasses.TheBarbaraB.MannPerformingArtsHall,theGallery ofFine Art, and theKulakowski Observatory arelocated on theLeeCounty Campus.
