Biography

Verlen Alex Bills (1921-2002) was a historian and archivist of the Pentecostal and Charismatic
movements in the United States. He was connected to Logos Magazine, the Parham family,
Continental Charismatic Convention, and His People Together. Bills was Pastoral Care Pastor at
Trinity Church in Houston, Texas, founded by John and Jan Haydel. He founded the Trinity
Bible Institute/South Texas Bible Institute, which was connected to Trinity Church.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of 88 boxes of material. Contents date throughout the 20th century, but
mostly span the 1970s-1980s. The principal focus of the collection is the Pentecostal and
Charismatic movement in the United States. The archival collection includes periodicals, articles,
topical research files, conference and ministry documents, audio and video recordings,
bibliographies, address books and directories documenting the Pentecostal, Latter Rain,
charismatic, and Third Wave movements in American church history. The 4,000 volume book
collection has been added to the David Allan Hubbard Library’s Special Collections. The entire
collection was originally known as the Charles Parham Collection.

Series Description

SERIES I: Collected Research Materials (Boxes 1-27)
Collected research materials include research files created by Bills on a wide range of
Pentecostal/Charismatic people, ministries, and topics. The files consist of clippings, copies, and
Bills’ own notes.

Series II: Ministries (Boxes 28-36)
Ministries includes letters to ministry supporters, flyers, brochures, and conference information.

Series III: Correspondence (Boxes 37-38)
Correspondence only includes personal letters. Mass mailings from ministries are found in the
Ministries series. A few letters are kept with the Conference and V Alex Bills subseries,
especially regarding the Continental Charismatic Convention and the Society for Pentecostal
Studies. Also included are business cards, ministry reply envelopes, directories, and address lists.
