Name of Club Description Advisor & Club Leaders Clubs ALZHEIMER’S Alzheimer's Insight is a club designed to learn Mr. Harry INSIGHT about Alzheimer's disease and cultivate Bauld, understanding. As Alzheimer's affects 5.3 million Sophia Reiss Americans, many members of the HM community know someone who suffers from this cognitive, memory and behavioral disorder. We will learn of how to recognize Alzheimer's, the research around Alzheimer's, and caring for people with Alzheimer's Disease. We will create a space to discuss experiences and ask questions. We hope to attend walks to support research, lobby Congress for research funding, learn from insightful speakers, participate in Relay for Life, and eliminate the stigma around Alzheimer's through our learning. Every other week on Thursdays during I period (unless more time needed) and possible Sunday walk. Name of Club Description Advisor & Club Leaders AMERICAN The American Red Cross Club raises money for Dr. Ndeye RED CROSS the organization American Red Cross and attends Diop-Bove, CLUB outreach events held by the Chapter Youth Amrita Acharya Council. Every year our club sells Candy Grams at school to raise money for the organization. We will hold 1-2 meetings per trimester and more as we approach the time around Candy grams sales (late January- early February) There may be times when we need help packaging candy grams after school hours but otherwise our meetings are only during I period. Students can choose to go to the Chapter Youth Council outreach events at the Red Cross chapter downtown which are held once a month on a Saturday; however, they are not mandatory upon joining the club. ANIMAL That Animal Awareness Society strives to inform Ms. Caroline AWARENESS the Horace Mann community about the horrors of Bartels, SOCIETY animal abuse throughout pet stores, puppy mills, Olivia Klein, and kill shelters. Additionally, we want to Ellie Klein emphasize the importance of adopting from shelters and focus on raising money for animal shelters. Students should expect about 2 meetings per month. There would a commitment to possible shelter visits on weekends. Name of Club Description Advisor & Club Leaders APSIS We build and test our own composite (APCP) Mr. Rudy AERO solid-fueled rocket motors. We operate in HM's Reiblein, chemistry labs, and turn shipments of metal & Benjamin chemicals into rockets! We're hoping to launch Spector several of our rockets this year, as well. Meetings are daily after school until 4:00. Club participants are not required to come to all of the meetings, or even most; rather, our expectation is that participants who enjoy it will come as often as they want because they enjoy it. Because Apsis is not a competitive club, and has no hard deadlines, we can be as small or as large of a time commitment as participants would like. ARCHITECTURE The Architecture Club gives interested students Mr. Brad CLUB an outlet to expand their architectural knowledge. Engelstein We will get involved in "HM in Motion," and Bliss Beyer, have plans to meet with Dr. Kelly about designing Jonah Newmark the Student Lounge. The Architecture Club will hold meetings approximately once a month during "I" periods on Mondays and Thursdays. Outside of these meetings, we hope to venture to a few of New York City's famous and significant architectural structures. Name of Club Description Advisor & Club Leaders ASHITA- Ashita Tomorrow is an American Japanese Ms. Mami TOMORROW student exchange program. We organize weekly Fujisaki, CLUB Skype sessions with students in Japan during the Grace Sander, school year. There is also a week long summer Gabrielle program when these Japanese students come visit Rahmin New York. One hour a week (flexible) to talk to Japanese students. No Japanese knowledge is required. There will be about one meeting a month and members can be teaching assistants during our optional week long program in the summer. AUTOMOTIVE A club where members of the Horace Mann Mr. Jason ENGINEERING Community who have an interest in cars and Torres, CLUB engineering can meet and talk about cars. Bi-Weekly Meetings with some weekend trips BIOLOGY Biology Olympiad is a club where students get to Dr. Matthew OLYMPIAD further their study and interest in biology though Wallenfang, the USABO exam. The club hosts meetings that Brian Song instruct members on varied topics from all sections of biology with the goal of preparing for the test. Biology Olympiad hosts monthly meetings during I periods. The members are expected to study for the test on their own, but they can study at their own pace, as much as needed. However, during the meetings members of Bio Olympiad are pointed to various sources, online and print, that will aid them in their studies. The Relay for Life event Mr. Ray Barile, FOR LIFE is another way in which the CAC intends to bring Emma Kelly, HM together to support the American Cancer Anna Yarosh, Society. Chloe Bown, Billy Lehrman We plan to hold meetings once or twice a month in order organize ourselves in relation to small events we hold on campus throughout the year. As May gets closer and Relay for Life approaches, the meetings may become more consistent and the time commitment may increase in order to ensure that the event runs smoothly. CHEMISTRY Chemistry Olympiad is a club that will prepare Dr. Rachel OLYMPIAD students for the Chemistry Olympiad exam in Mohammed, March. We will study using past exams. Members Eumin Hong, can also ask chemistry questions from their class. Ella Feiner AP Chemistry is not required. The club will meet once every two weeks. The exam is held on a Saturday morning in March. The objective is to have a positive effect on Tenzin Sherpa both HM and beyond through the French language. The club will be relatively low-commitment for members, and meetings will only occur when planning events (more information to come). Club leaders and advisor will meet once a month during an I period. COALITION Coalition Z aims to educate students on how to Mr. David Z advocate for the political change they wish to see. It is also a way to work with other schools around New York City, a few of which have already started their own Coalition Z clubs. We plan to work with these other political clubs to organize monthly newsletters about the issues that we are working to solve. We intend to hold I period meetings every other week, during which students could call representatives, write letters, and discuss political issues. Then there will be one long meeting during class periods when the test will be proctored. Name of Club Description Advisor & Club Leaders DEBATE We participate in Public Forum debate, in which Mr. Jonathan TEAM students, in teams of two, debate teams from other Nye, Elizabeth Raab, schools on all different topics related to current Ella Feiner, events. We attend monthly tournaments on both Honor our local NYC circuit and on the national circuit, McCarthy against schools from all across the country. The club is organized into varsity debaters, mainly juniors and seniors, and novice and junior varsity debaters, mainly freshmen and sophomores. We consistently hold weekly and bi-weekly meetings, as well as occasional after-school practices. Students usually attend one or two after-school or weekend tournaments per month. Attending each tournament also entails a lot of research and preparation beforehand, and so being an active member in Debate is a very substantial commitment. In addition to tournaments, most members also help coach the middle school debate team at In-Tech, an urban public school near HM, when they have time on Mondays and Wednesdays after school. EAST WIND East Wind West Wind has members dedicated to Dr. Elisa WEST WIND discussions about Asian American identity and Milkes, diversity within the Horace Mann community. Ms. Deborah Anyone is welcome to participate in weekly Stanford, meetings and annual club events including Asia Ms. Denise Night, Dorr retreat, and bake sales. DiRenzo, Grace Sander, We will hold one meeting almost every week Alex Chang, during I periods. We hope to see commitment Mari Nakagawa from members during the weeks leading up to Asia Night because there will be a lot of preparation (dance choreography, planning, rehearsals etc.). There will be two or three days where members will stay after school to prepare. There will also be a weekend retreat to Dorr that is open to EWWW and Union members. Overall, the Economists' Society will create an engaging discussion setting in which members can express their ideas and interpretations in a thoughtful environment, resulting in the comprehension of major economic themes. The Economists' Society will meet once a week in discussion-based settings. However, members with positions will be expected to spend 20-30 minutes a week aiding in the preparation of the next discussion.
