Scope and Content Note
The papers of Clinton P. Anderson (1895-1975) span the years 1938-1973, with the bulk of the material dating from 1948
to 1973. The collection contains correspondence, memoranda, speeches, hearing transcripts, reports, and other papers
pertaining to Anderson's service in Congress, 1941-1973. Subjects include agriculture, civil rights, conservation and natural
resources, education, health care, Indian affairs, nuclear energy, poverty, and the Vietnam War. Included also are
Anderson's files as a member of the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy pertaining, in part, to the U.S. Atomic Energy
Commission, Lewis L. Strauss, and the security investigation of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Other files relate to the Nuclear
Test Ban Treaty of 1963, Atoms for Peace Awards proposed by Dwight D. Eisenhower to encourage international
cooperation in the use of nuclear energy, the Senate Committee on Aeronautical and Space Sciences, and the relief program
following the Alaskan earthquake, 1964.
The collection is organized into eight series: General Correspondence, Administrative File, Legislative File, Joint
Commission on Atomic Energy, Special Committees, Speeches and Writings, Appointment Books, and Miscellany.

Generally arranged by sessions of Congress, although some material predates or postdates the
congressional session. The files are arranged by a decimal classification with numbers
representing a particular subject. Administrative files for Anderson's Albuquerque, N.Mex.,
office are separate for the years 1952-72.

the Congressional Record, reports, transcripts of hearings, and copies of bills.
Arranged generally by sessions of Congress, although some material predates or postdates the
session under which it is filed. The files are arranged alphabetically by committee for each
session. Included are copies of pending bills and amendments and material relating to them,
which are arranged numerically by the number of the proposed legislation files for the 77th
-79th Congresses, when Anderson served in the House. They are arranged alphabetically by
subject.
