Anderson (1895-1975) span the years 1938-1973, with the bulk of the material dating from 1948 to 1973. The collection contains correspondence, memoranda, speeches, hearing transcripts, reports, and other papers pertaining to Anderson's service in Congress, 1941-1973. Subjects include agriculture, civil rights, conservation and natural resources, education, health care, Indian affairs, nuclear energy, poverty, and the Vietnam War. Included also are Anderson's files as a member of the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy pertaining, in part, to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, Lewis L. Strauss, and the security investigation of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Other files relate to the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty of 1963, Atoms for Peace Awards proposed by Dwight D. Eisenhower to encourage international cooperation in the use of nuclear energy, the Senate Committee on Aeronautical and Space Sciences, and the relief program following the Alaskan earthquake, 1964. Generally arranged by sessions of Congress, although some material predates or postdates the congressional session. The files are arranged by a decimal classification with numbers representing a particular subject. Administrative files for Anderson's Albuquerque, N.Mex., office are separate for the years 1952-72.
