Sheperis earned her PhD in Counselor Education from the University of Mississippi. A core faculty member in the Mental Health Counseling Program of Walden University, Dr. Sheperis is a Licensed Professional Counselor, National Certified Coun- selor, Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor, and Approved Clinical Supervisor with over 20 years of experience in clinical mental health counseling settings. She has served as cochair of the ACA Ethics Committee and is involved with the Association for Assess- ment and Research in Counseling, the Association for Humanistic Counseling, and the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. Dr. Sheperis has authored numer- ous articles in peer-reviewed journals in addition to publishing chapters in edited texts. Dr. Sheperis presents regularly on topics related to clinical mental health counseling and has received several awards for her teaching, scholarship, and research. Her primary areas of interest include clinical mental health counselor development, assessment of mental health and coping, counseling ethics, and supervision. Carl J. Sheperis is the chair of Counseling and Special Populations at Lamar University. He has over 20 years of clinical experience in the assessment and treatment of behav- ioral disorders and psychopathology in infancy and childhood. Aside from being a uni- versity administrator, Dr. Sheperis teaches master’s-level courses in mental health counseling, assessment, and research. He is the lead editor of Counseling Research: Quantitative, Qualitative, and Mixed Method Designs for Pearson. Dr. Sheperis is a mem- ber of the board of directors of the National Board for Certified Counselors. He has received the ACA Counselor Educator Advocacy Award, the Outstanding Counselor Edu- cator Pre-tenure Award from the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and the Donald Hood Research Award from the Association for Assessment and Research in Counseling. Dr. Sheperis has authored over 100 articles, book chapters, encyclopedia entries, and books. He presents regularly on topics related to clinical men- tal health counseling. v This page intentionally left blank ABOUT THE AUTHORS Mary L. Bartlett Mary L. Bartlett earned her doctorate in Counselor Education from Auburn University and is an independent behavioral health consultant, suicidologist, and international speaker. She formerly served as suicide prevention and risk consultant to a national treatment center for eating disorders and has been an assistant professor. With 15 years of clini- cal and teaching experience, she is an authorized trainer for the American Association of Suicidology and the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, and is a qualified master resilience trainer. Her professional credentials include certification as a National Certified Counselor, a Licensed Professional Counselor, a certified state counseling supervisor, a certified family life educator, and a military family life consultant. Dr. Bartlett has au- thored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals in addition to publishing chapters in edited texts; has received awards for her teaching, scholarship, and research; and pres- ently serves Department of Defense leadership on suicide- and resilience-related matters. Ioana Boie Ioana Boie earned her PhD in Counselor Education from the University of Texas at San Antonio. She is a core faculty member in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling pro- gram and Counselor Education and Supervision with Marymount University, and is also a Licensed Professional Counselor (Texas) and a National Certified Counselor. She has served as secretary for the Texas Counselors for Social Justice and is involved with the National Eating Disorders Association, Association for Creativity in Counseling, Texas Counseling Association, and Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. Dr. Boie has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented at numer- ous professional conferences on topics related to diversity of eating disorders and body image, clinical supervision, immigration issues, and equine-facilitated therapy. Caroline S. Booth Caroline S. Booth is an associate professor at North Carolina A&T State University. A marriage and family counselor by training, she now teaches and supervises in the Mental Health Counseling (Clinical) program. Dr. Booth graduated from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she earned her MS in Community Counseling, EdS in Marriage and Family Counseling, and PhD in Counseling and Counselor Education. Currently, Dr. Booth is a National Certified Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor in North Carolina, Distance Credentialed Counselor, and Approved Clinical Supervisor. She is the author of numerous publications and professional presentations relating to her research interests in wellness across the life span, gender issues, family counseling, and the effective use of technology in counseling. Matthew R. Buckley Matthew R. Buckley earned his master’s in Community Counseling and EdD in Counselor Education from Idaho State University. He served as the former program director for the Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling program for Walden University and vii viii About the Authors is currently a core faculty member for the program. Dr. Buckley is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, Approved Clinical Supervisor, and a Distance Credentialed Counselor with over 20 years of experience in clinical mental health counseling settings. He serves as an exam commit- tee member for the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) for the National Board for Certified Counselors and has worked extensively with licensure and credentialing issues through most of his career. Dr. Buckley’s primary areas of inter- est include counselor development, group counseling, licensure and credentialing, and clinical supervision. Melanie Bullock Melanie Bullock is an assistant professor in the Counseling and Development program at Lamar University. Her clinical experience includes working with adjudicated youth through the Texas Youth Commission, with victims and perpetrators of relationship vio- lence, and in the clinics at the University of North Texas. Dr. Bullock’s research interests include working with at-risk youth and technology in counseling. She has served as president of the Texas Association for Counselor Education and Supervision and has held board positions with the American College Counseling Association, Texas College Counseling Association, and Chi Sigma Iota. Dr. Bullock has presented on various counseling-related topics at state, national, and international conferences. Catherine Y. Chang Catherine Y. Chang, PhD, LPC, NCC, is a professor at Georgia State University and program coordinator for its Counselor Education and Practice doctoral program. She has published and presented in the areas of social justice and advocacy, multicultural counseling competence, privilege and oppression issues, and supervision. Additionally, she was the lead editor for the book Professional Counseling Excellence Through Leadership and Advocacy and the lead editor for the special issue on social justice of the Counselor Education and Supervision journal. She has held several leadership positions, including president of Chi Sigma Iota (2009–2010) and vice president for the Asian and Pacific Islander American concerns of the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development (2010–2013). She is the recipient of the American Counseling Association (ACA) Research Award, the ACA Counselor Educator Advocacy Award, the Association for Assessment in Counseling and Education (AACE) MECD Research Award, the Pre- tenure Counselor Educator Award from the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and the Alumni Excellence Award from the Department of Counseling and Educational Development at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She serves on the editorial boards of the journals Counselor Education and Supervision , Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development , and Counseling Outcome Research and Evaluation . R. J. Davis R. J. Davis, PhD, LPC-Intern, is an assistant professor at Lamar University. Dr. Davis’s teaching career began in secondary education with a decade of experience working with, and teaching multiple subjects to, diverse populations. His experience as a coun- selor comes from his service as a university career counselor and later as a director About the Authors ix of a counseling and training clinic. Dr. Davis is active in service to the profession in his current role as president of Texas Career Development Association and president elect of Texas Counselors for Social Justice. He is also an active member of state and national counseling associations and has presented at state and national level confer- ences, including the Texas Counseling Association, Texas School Counselor Association, Texas College Counseling Association, American Counseling Association, Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and Association for Assessment and Research in Counseling. Laura R. Haddock Laura R. Haddock received her PhD in Counselor Education from the University of Mississippi. Dr. Haddock has been a counselor educator since 2005, supported by more than 20 years as a mental health counselor. She serves as core faculty for the Counselor Education and Supervision program at Walden University and is a Licensed Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, and Approved Clinical Supervisor. Dr. Haddock is an active counseling professional and has served on the Mississippi State Board of Examiners for Licensed Professional Counselors and the executive boards for the Mississippi Counseling Association and Mississippi Licensed Professional Counselors Association. Dr. Haddock routinely presents research at the state, national, and inter- national levels and publishes scholarly writings for professional counseling journals and textbooks. She serves as an editorial board member for the J ournal of Counseling Research and Practice and the Tennessee Counseling Association Journal and has won awards for her teaching and research. Her research interests include counselor wellness and secondary trauma, spirituality, crisis response, cultural diversity, and supervision. Stacy Henning Stacy Henning is assistant professor in the Professional Counseling Department at Webster University. She holds a PhD in Counselor Education from CACREP-accredited doctor- al and master’s programs and is a Licensed Professional Counselor and an Approved Clinical Supervisor through NBCC. Dr. Henning is an active member of ACA committees, a site team chair for the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), and a practicing professional counselor in St. Louis. Current research includes ethics in counselor education, diversity and religion and spirituality in counsel- ing, women in life transition, teaching efficacy in counselor education, and neurobiology and counseling efficacy. K. Dayle Jones K. Dayle Jones is associate professor and coordinator of the Mental Health Counseling program at the University of Central Florida. Dr. Jones has been in the counseling field for 22 years and is a Florida Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). She earned her master’s in Education and Human Development from Rollins College and her PhD in Counselor Education from the University of South Carolina. Dr. Jones is very active in the areas of scholarship, research, and professional service. She has published two textbooks: Introduction to the Profession of Counseling and Assessment Procedures for Counselors and Helping Professionals .
