On November 20, 2010, she lost her battle to cancer. About two months before her death, she was able to attend the AMTA National Massage Convention to meet the many loving people in this great profession. All I have become, and all that I will continue to achieve in this life, is due to the unselfish and unconditional love of my beautiful mother, June. Throughout her life she taught me the importance of honesty, integrity, unconditional love, and putting God and people first. Her last words to me when we said goodbye were “I will be with you in the sky, as you continue your travels to fulfill God’s plan by helping others facilitate healing throughout the world.” I love you, Mom. Your beautiful spirit will live on through this incredible work. Thanks for shaping my destiny. We literally “bumped” into one another as I wandered around the hotel lobby searching for a familiar face. Although I’d been involved in bodywork (Rolfing) for many years, I’d not attended a massage conference and James, sensing my insecurity, immediately put me at ease with his kind, playful, and teasing spirit. Although much water has passed under the bridge since those early convention days, many special remembrances live on. By far, my fondest mem- ories were of our weeklong co-teaching events in Costa Rica (Pain Management in Paradise) and James’s very popular “Seminars at Sea” cruises. There’s nothing quite like the physical, emotional, and intellectual bonds that form when you have the opportunity to eat, live, and learn together for a week. From the first day of our initial co-teaching gig, we knew—and the class knew—this would not be your typical workshop. A stimulating, fun-filled, and unpredictable magic filled the air. As I observed James during his presentations, it was like watching an accomplished athlete perform his sport. With almost effortless motion, the athlete, like the master practitioner, is so good at what he does, has prac- ticed it so many times, that it seems almost effortless. But we all know better. Passion for the work drives some, like James Waslaski, to generously share their lifelong collection of touch therapy experiences and I’m delighted he has accomplished this in his metic- ulously written and handsomely illustrated textbook Clinical Massage Therapy: A Structural Approach to Pain Management. Although Clinical Massage Therapy requires extensive study in therapeutic assessment, manipulation, and restoration of movement, the book’s goal is to teach practicing somatic therapists a straightforward, pain-free treatment protocol for reducing pain and correcting dysfunction. Thousands of manual therapists have learned this popular multidis- ciplinary method over the years and the results speak for themselves. It has been said that pain management may be recession-proof. If so, this text is a “must have” for every practitioner’s collection. As you delve into Clinical Massage Therapy, James will lead you on a step-by-step journey that ends by establishing structural and functional balance for a wide variety of musculoskeletal disorders, chronic pain conditions, and sports injuries. You will learn practical ways to filter the results of a client’s history, palpatory findings, and functional tests through a philosophic lens based on basic science and clinical reasoning. Throughout the book, James emphasizes how impaired or altered functioning of the neuromuscular system leads to stress and pain that impedes optimal athletic performance and enjoyment of daily activities. Many of us know James as a very generous, hardworking, and giving educator who’s dedi- cated his life to helping therapists elevate their somatic skills while encouraging them to have fun, be vulnerable, and to appreciate the knowledge this great profession has to offer. This is accomplished through attitude—the way we treat people who come to us for pain management. Therapeutic touch establishes and maintains the confidence, trust, and healing relationship required to make technique effective. Clinical Massage Therapy is human contact at its best and James delivers human contact and all it offers for a better healing relationship and a better world.
