A Phi Beta Kappa alumnus, he has written and collaborated on numerous articles on many areas of biological psychiatry and has developed language teaching programs including “Spanish Say Hello,” “Japanese Say Hello,” “English Say Hello” and “Speed English,” all published by WordMate in Skokie, Illinois. Louis earned a Master of Arts degree in education (1954) at CCNY and a Ph.D. (1957) at the University of Chicago. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and was an exchange scientist at the Bulgarian Academy of Science in 1975 (as part of an exchange program with the U.S. National Academy of Sciences). Louis and his wife, Anne, live in Skokie, Illinois and have three sons, John, David, and Michael. Leonard Aconsky, a consulting chemical engineer, is the director of Acotech, Inc. and of Vulcan International, located in Long Island City. director of three companies. He earned a Master of Science degree in chemical engineering (1955) from Columbia University. Leonard holds four U.S. patents and has published numerous professional articles and papers on such topics as sugar processing, blood iodine, and water analysis, among others.. He and his wife, Susan, live in Manhattan. Martin V. Alonzo has retired as chairman, president and CEO of Chase Industries, Inc. this past September. He is an investor, based in Greenwich, Connecticut. He is a member of the American Association of the Knights of Malta, of Legatus. and belongs to many professional and civic organizations. He earned a Master of Business Administration degree (1971) from Baruch College. While at City, he belonged to Beta Alpha Psi and Beta Gamma Sigma. He and his wife, Sabina, live in Greenwich and have three children, Martin, Marlene, and Sabrina. Ann Alterman has retired from her work as an elementary school teacher. She belonged to the Education Society at City. A widow, Ann lives in Scarsdale, New York, and has three children, Ava, Daniel, and Harvey. Carl J. Alterman lives in Mamaroneck, New York. Francis J. Anaya, an electronic engineer, has retired from the technical staff of Lucent Technologies Bell Laboratories. He earned a Master of Electrical Engineering degree (1958) from New York University. Francis and his wife, Anna, live in Hillsdale, New Jersey and have three sons, Victor, Gary, and Steven. Page 2 CLASS OF 1952—50TH REUNION Theodore Barash, an advertising and marketing expert, is a consultant to three companies which market over-the-counter drug and dietary supplements to segments of the health enhancement market. Over the years, he served as: president and CEO of Ted Barash & Company, an advertising and marketing firm; as president of Pritikin Better Health, Inc.; president of Stresscare Systems, Inc., and as director of the National Institute of Electromedicine. Ted has been an active member of the Ad Club of New York, serving on many committees. He has published in professional journals. He and his wife, Helene, live in Delray, Beach, Florida. Arlene Eber Becker has retired as a teacher. She is president of the sisterhood of the Bethpage Jewish Community Center and editor of the center’s newsletter. While at City, she belonged to House Plan. Arlene and her husband, Aaron, a 1951 alumnus of City’s School of Engineering, live in Old Bethpage, New York, and have three daughters, Lynn, Jacqueline, and Helaine. Conrad Berke, known as Connie while at CCNY, is associate publisher of the newspaper, The Jewish Week. He has written “Successful Advertising for Small Businesses” (John Wiley & Sons) and “Successful Advertising Principles” (Saracon Publishing) and is an adjunct professor, teaching advertising and business writing courses, at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey. He was participated in acting and dancing organizations during his City College years. Connie and his wife, Sara, live in Teaneck, New Jersey, and have three children, Robin, Richard, and Randi. Alfred Braun is a semi-retired attorney and insurance broker in Hartsdale, New York. He earned his Juris Doctor degree at New York Law School. Alfred and his wife, Bernice, live in New Rochelle, New York, and have two daughters, Carol and Diane. Selwyn Brent, known as Selwyn Brest while at CCNY, is a retired computer consultant and teacher. He holds a Master of Arts in education degree from City and a Master of Business Administration degree from Columbia University. He and his wife, Elaine, live in Huntington Beach, California. They have two sons, Paul and Michael. Martin I. Bresler, an attorney, has retired as a partner in the firm of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan in Manhattan. He holds a law degree (1955) from Harvard Law School. Martin has served as president of the New York Chapter of the American Jewish Committee and as a national vice president of that organization, as president of the Lexington Democratic Club, vice president of the Federation Employment and Guidance Service, and as an executive committee member of Americans for Peace Now. In 1992, he received the American Jewish Committee’s Stanley M. Isaacs Human Relations Award. He belonged to Theatron at City. Rosalie Farhi Brill has retired from her work as an elementary school teacher. She has served as a member of the Scholarship Committee of the American Association of University Women, a board member of the Palm Beach Chapter of the American Cancer Society, among other professional and civic activities. While at City, she belonged to the Education Society, the Young Democrats, and House Plan. A widow, Rosalie lives in South Burlington, Vermont and has three children, Eileen, Robert, and Betsy. John S. Burke, a civil engineer, has retired as deputy county engineer for San Diego County in California. He has been actively involved with young people’s track, field and tennis teams in La Jolla, California, and is a member of several professional organizations. At City, he was involved with the Newman Club, the Alpha Beta Gamma Fraternity, and with Inter School League basketball. He and his wife, Joan, live in La Jolla and have two sons, Terence and Jeffrey. John B. Cartafalsa is a no-fault arbitrator for the New York State Insurance Dept.. He was awarded the Army’s Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaves and holds the rank of colonel. John earned a law degree at NYU and also graduated (1978) from the Command and General Staff College. He is a commander within the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre. At City, he belonged to ROTC. John and his wife, Lydia Ann, live in Manhattan and have two children, John and Mary. Herbert L. Chabot is a judge in United States Tax Court in Washington, D.C. He earned a law degree (1957) from Columbia University and a Master of Laws degree (1964) from Georgetown University. A member of many professional organizations, Herbert was elected a delegate to the 1967-68 Maryland Constitutional Convention. He was a member of the Student Council during his CCNY years. Herbert and his wife, Aleen, a 1954 alumna of CCNY’s School of Education, live in Rockville, Maryland and have four children, Elliot, Donald, Lewis, and Nancy Jo. Page 4 CLASS OF 1952—50TH REUNION Robert Chonoles, a chemical engineer, has retired as a plant manager for Occidental Petroleum. He has been a licensed charter boat captain for the United States Coast Guard and a reading tutor at St. Lucie County Elementary School. He was named Volunteer of the Year at the Mariposa Elementary School in Port St. Lucie, Florida for the 2000-2001 school year. Robert and his wife, Carole, live in Port St. Lucie and have three children, Adrienne, Lawrence, and Frank. Jacob Cohen has been project coordinator for professional development programs in mathematics/education in the School of Education at CCNY for almost 15 years. In 1987, he retired from the New York City public school system after 25 years of serving as assistant principal and supervisor of the Mathematics Department at Theodore Roosevelt High School in the Bronx. He is co-author and editor of several New York City Board of Education curriculum guides in mathematics and co-author of two mathematics textbooks. He has been named Supervisor of the Year for Bronx High Schools and was elected to Kappa Delta Pi, the honor society in education. Jacob earned a Master of Arts degree (1956) at City. He was president of his House Plan, Wiley ’52, and belonged to Hillel during his undergraduate days. He and his wife, Mabel, live in the Bronx and have two sons, David and Daniel. Rosemary Dunn Conn has retired as an elementary school teacher and math lab specialist for the Smithtown Central Schools. She holds a Master of Science degree in special education (1983) at Long Island University’s C.W. Post College. While at City, she belonged to the Newman Club, the Varsity Club, and the Student Council. Rosemary and her husband, Harry, live in Moriches, New York, and have five children, Michael, Regina, Timothy, Kevin, and Lauren. Alvin James Conway, a former hospital administrator, has retired from his position as president and CEO of the Catholic Medical center. He earned a Master of Science degree (1954) at Columbia University, belongs to many professional organizations, has received many awards and has published widely. He and his wife, Gail, live in Tarrytown, New York and have four children, James, John, Susan and Christopher. Page 5 CLASS OF 1952—50TH REUNION Morton Crair has retired as program manager of telecommunications systems for the Atlantic Richfield Company. At City, he participated in the Pershing Rifles. He and his wife, Ruth, live in Calabasas, California and have four children, Bruce, Nathan, Beverly, and Michael. Irwin W. Danz, a business consultant, is president of Benchmark Consultants, Inc. in Chicago, Illinois. He earned a Master of Business Administration degree (1960) from CCNY and belongs to the national and the Illinois professional organizations for certified public accountants. Irwin and his wife, Ruth Ellen, live in Wilmette, Illinois and have three children, Caryn, Elizabeth, and Andrew. Sam Davis is a consultant and executive in the management of strategic organizational change with particular expertise in the area of health care institutions. His recent clients include Quest Diagnostics Inc, The Mount Sinai Medical Center, NY, The Visiting Nurse Service of NY, The United Hospital Fund, Methodist Hospital of Indiana, Indiana University Medical Center, and Kaiser Permanente, Northern California. Sam has been President and Chief Executive Officer of New York’s Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he led one of the first successful participative and collaborative large-scale strategy planning efforts for an academic medical center. He is senior director of the Secta Consulting Group, Inc. and from 1990-99 was leader of the Health Care Practice of the Delta Consulting Group. Sam is also clinical professor at Columbia University’s School of Public Health and a Distinguished Service Professor at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He has received the Humanitarian Award for Distinguished Service from the National Conference of Christians and Jews. He has served as chairman of the board of Versus Technologies, president of the Columbia University School of Public Health Alumni Association, and as Special Administrator, Board member, and Chair of the Strategy Committee of Medica Health Plans, at the request of the Minnesota Attorney General. Sam has published widely. He earned a Master of Science degree (1957) from Columbia University. He and his wife, Ellen, live in Rye, New York and have four children, Joseph, Thomas, Jonathan, and Jessica. Rosario A. DeFlorio, an engineer, who has retired as a data communications professional. Dellatto has retired as a supervisor of shipbuilding for the U.S. Navy in New York. He has published several papers on maintenance of naval ships and equipment and holds Navy civilian service awards and outstanding service awards. Anthony earned a Master’s in Civil Engineering degree from the Polytechnic Institute of New York and belongs to the alumni associations of both that institution and CCNY as well as to several professional organizations. A widower, he lives in Brooklyn and has two children, Judith and Martin. Clara Grubman Dinner has retired from her work as an elementary school teacher. She earned a Master of Science in Education degree (1958) at City and belongs to the National Education Association. Clara and her husband, Leonard, live in Monsey, New York and have a daughter, Ellen. Bernard Edelstein has retired as a physician (internal medicine) in Rego Park, New York. A Phi Beta Kappa alumnus, he earned his M.D. degree (1956) at Columbia University. He belongs to the Queens Medical Society and is an attending physician at the New York Medical Center of Queens and at Parkway Hospital. At City, he belonged to the Caduceus Society and the Allegarooters. He and his wife, Barbara, live in Manhasset Hills, New York and have four daughters, Ellen, Lori, Susan and Nancy. Arthur Elfenbein is an attorney in Woodmere, New York. He earned his law degree (1955) at the Fordham University School of Law. He has been an associate professor at NYU’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies. Sidney H. Engel, a chemical engineer, has retired as a plant manager. He earned a Master of Science degree in chemical engineering (1953) from Columbia University. He and his wife, Ethel, live in Wilmington, Delaware and have three children, Laura, John, and Jim. Sherrie Landau Epstein has a private practice as a marriage and family therapist. A licensed educational psychologist, she served as district psychologist to the Millbrae Elementary School District in California from 1965-1985. She her a Master of Arts degree with our class at City, after having earned her BA at Hunter College. Sherrie did additional graduate work at the University of California at Berkeley. The California Association of School Psychologists named her Outstanding School Psychologist for 1975. Sherrie has written three books, “Child Development through Literature,” “The Teaching Experience through Literature,” and “The Exceptional Child through Literature’ (with Dr. Elliott Landau and Ann Stone), all published by Prentice Hall. She and her husband, Wallace, live in Millbrae and have three children, Eve, Gordon, and Carolyn. Page 7 CLASS OF 1952—50TH REUNION Herbert Max Ernst has retired as a computer engineer for the U.S. Navy, an adjunct professor at the University of the District of Columbia. He has held many high level posts at U.S. Navy and Marine Corps research centers and received Outstanding Performance Awards at the U.S. Navy’s David Taylor Research and Development Center, where he was branch and division chief from 1956-1975. He has written classified and unclassified internal documents for the center and for the U. S. Marine Corps. He earned a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering degree (1971) and completed all but the thesis requirement for a doctorate in that field from the University of Maryland. Herbert and his wife, Ruth, live in Washington, D.C. and have three children, Warren, M. Bonnie, and Elaine. Bernard Esrig is president of Marathon Infants and Toddlers, Inc., an organization which works with youngsters with disabilities. He has served as president of the Brotherhood Synagogue in Manhattan and on the executive committee of the regional board of the Anti-Defamation League. Bernard and his wife, Paulette, live in Manhattan and have three sons, Seth, Marc, and Dave. Alan Feigenbaum is single and lives in Bothell, Washington. Estelle Pilelsky Feldman has retired as a teacher and is now a published children’s writer. She has written “Snowy Winter Day” (Scholastic Press), as well as poems, stories and activities which have appeared in Hopscotch, Boys’ Quest, Lollipops, Ladybug and Humpty- Dumpty Magazines. Estelle chairs the writers’ group of the Rockaway Music and Arts Council and heads Estelle Feldman Productions in Belle Harbor, N.Y. She and her husband, Nathan, live in Belle Harbor and have two children, Ira and Beth. Sylvia Bluestein Feldman has retired as a CPA and a teacher. She belongs to various community and professional organizations. Sylvia earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting at Wash College. She is divorced, lives in Southfield, Michigan, and has four children, Robert, Larry, Elyse, and Janet. Donald Feldstein, a social worker, has retired as Associate Executive Vice President of the Council of Jewish Federations in New York. He received the Outstanding Paper of the Year Award of the Journal of Jewish Communal Service, and has served as president of Young Israel of West Hempstead. He earned a Master of Social Work degree (1954) and a Doctor of Social Work degree (1973) from Columbia University. He and his wife, Shirley, live in Teaneck, New Jersey, and have four children, Michael, Eric, Miriam, and Ruth. Jay S. Ferkin, a management psychologist, heads Jay S. Ferkin Associates in Great Neck, New York. He earned a Master of Arts degree (1953) from CCNY and has done additional graduate work at Teachers College, Columbia University and at CUNY. Jay is a member of many professional organizations and has served as a trustee of the Village of Great Neck Plaza, and as president of the Claridge Cooperative Apartment Corporation. At City, he served on our class’ Senior Prom Committee and belonged to House Plan. He and his wife, Jacqueline, live in Great Neck and have four children, Susan, Linda, Jeffrey, and Scott. Annette Bergman Fidler, a fund-raiser, has retired as director of special projects for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. A member of the National Society of Fundraising Executives, she served during her CCNY years, as co-chair of the Senior Prom Committee, as president of the Education Society, and on House Plan’s Executive Committee. Annette is divorced, lives in Manhattan, and has two children, Lisa and Matthew. Samuel Fillenbaum is a professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He earned his Master of Arts degree (1954) and his Ph.D. (1956) at the University of California at Berkeley. Samuel has written “Structure in the Subjective Lexicon” (Academic Press) and “Syntactic Factors in Memory” (Morton). He and his wife, Gerda, live in Chapel Hill and have a daughter, Eve. Hyman Finn has retired as an office manager. He has served as treasurer of Zabokritcher YMBS, Inc. He and his wife, Katalin, live in Brooklyn and have a daughter, Judith. Morton D. Fisch is a doctor of internal medicine in Manhattan. He earned his M.D. degree (1957) at SUNY Downstate and is past president of the Lenox Hill Hospital Alumni Association. He has received a certificate of recognition for 25 years of service as a member of the faculty of NYU Medical School. During his CCNY years, he was a member of the Baskerville Chemistry Society. She earned a Master of Arts degree (1971) from Teachers College, Columbia University. Evelyn is divorced, lives in Forest Hills, and has three children, Michael, Andrew, and Diane. Solomon D. Friedman, an attorney, is a partner in Moses and Singer LLP in New York. He earned his Law degree (1961) at Brooklyn Law School. He belongs to several professional organizations. At City, he was a member of the Phi Alpha fraternity. Solomon and his wife, Priscilla, live in Manhattan, and have five children, June (deceased), Carrie, Stephen, Jordan, and Jill. Burton A. Friedman, an attorney and CPA, has a law practice in Forest Hills. He earned his law degree (1958) at New York Law School and his Master of Laws degree (1964) at New York University. At City, he participated in intramural basketball. Burton and his wife, Barbara, live in Forest Hills and have a son, Daniel. Herbert Freilich is a physician in Brooklyn, New York. A Phi Beta Kappa alumnus, he earned his M.D. degree (1956) at Downstate Medical Center and a Master of Science in Health Administration (1963) at Columbia University’s School of Public Health. He has written for many professional publications. At City, he participated in the orchestra. Herbert and his wife, Myra, live in Brooklyn, and have six children, Amy, Aaron, Deborah, Joshua, Joel, and Neil. David Gallant has retired as a psychologist for the Harvard Community Health Plan in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is the author of “Mentally Ill Mothers and Their Children” (1975). David earned his Master of Science degree (1956) at Yale University and his Ph.D. (1972) at Boston University. He and his wife, Erica Harth, live in Watertown, Massachusetts. Carolyn L. Cohen Ganz has retired as a second grade teacher and an adult education teacher of English as a second language for the Syosset Central School District. She earned a Master of Arts degree (1952) from City College. Claire and her husband, Leonard, live in Syosset, New York, and have two children, Ronald and Haidee. Seymour Gartenberg has retired as executive vice president of CBS Records. He has served as President of The City College Fund, of the American Management Association, of the Institute of Management Accountants, and of the Mill Island Civic Association. Seymour was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters degree 1996 by City College. He and his wife, Phyllis, live in Brooklyn and have three children, Leslie, Karen, and Mark. Esther Kupinsky Gelbard has retired as an administrative analyst for the New Jersey Department of Human Services in Trenton, New Jersey. She has served as treasurer of the NOW-New Jersey, and is currently treasurer of that organization’s Princeton Area division. She has been a women’s issues specialist and chair of the Speakers Bureau of AARP-New Jersey since 1997. During her CCNY days, she was active in various political clubs and was a member of Goethals ’52 and of the Beaverettes. Esther is divorced, lives in Monte Township, New Jersey, and has two children, Sheree and Jeffrey. Mort Gerberg is a freelance cartoonist and writer whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, Playboy, Publishers Weekly, the New York Times and in some 38 books. During his student days, he drew a weekly cartoon, “City Snickers,” for “City Downtown’s” newspaper The Ticker. He has served as president of the Magazine Cartoonist’s Guild and belongs to the Cartoonists Association and the National Cartoonists Society. He has taken extensive coursework at NYU. Mort and his wife, Judith, live in Manhattan and have a daughter, Lilia. William J. Gibbons, an attorney, has retired as Vice President of Labor Relations for Pan American Airlines and as Senior Vice President of Administration for Max Factor, Inc. He earned his Juris Doctor degree (1959) at St. John’s University and belongs to both the New York State and Oregon State Bar. As a student at CCNY, he was the business manager of the literary magazine, Sound and Fury. William is divorced and lives in Palm Springs, California. He has three children, Laura, Philip, and Sally. Leonard E. Gilmar, known during his student days as Leonard Glauberman, has retired as Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President for finance for the Merit Oil Company in Haverford, Pennsylvania. He earned his Law degree (1955) at Brooklyn Law School. He and his wife, Jaye D. Pinch, live in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania and have five children, Elyssa, Samuel, Rachel, Andrew, and Jonathan.
