Description:Citizenship is a new subject, combining an academic and a practical approach to the individual’s role in the community. The aim of citizenship is to encourage both a greater awareness of, and a more active participation in, social and political issues, at local, national and international levels. This text is based on the current AQA AS Social Sciences: Citizenship’s specification, but may be used as the basis for study of the subject at various levels. The approach adopted is a combination of academic material, providing a sound basis for study of the theories and structures with which students should be familiar, supported and developed by a series of practical exercises, projects and examination style questions. These have been designed to not only develop the students’ knowledge and understanding of the subject, but will also provide teachers with guidance as to how key skills may be approached through this topic. The subject matter has been divided into three sections, each of which corresponds to one of the AQA AS Level Modules. For students who are not following this particular specification, each individual section will provide an introduction to their role within the State, the political process and how society operates. Each will also provide an opportunity to develop skills in effective communication, problem solving and working with others. For those who do not go on to sit an examination at AS level, other subjects that have close links with this subject are Law, Government and Politics and Sociology.
