Despite his knowledge of Latin grammar, it is possible to contestsomeofhisinterpretiveandtextualdecisions.Further, hetendedtobe gulledbyCicero’srhetoricalwilesandtoooftenfellbackonhisown(oftenquite deft)renderingsattheexpenseofexplaininghowtheLatinactuallyworks(aneed perhapslessurgentinthosedays).Inaddition, somedecisionstakenbyauthor andpublishermadethebooklessthanideally“user-friendly.”Itwasdecidedthat theLatintextshouldbeareprintofClark’sOCT,soAustinoccasionallyfound himself in the awkward position of arguing against his own text.
