WOLSTENHOLME and MAEVE O'CONNOR Haemopoietic Stem Cells Ciba Foundation CoDvriaht 0 1973 Ciba Foundation Chairman’s introduction J. F. LOUTIT MRC Radiobiology Unit, HarweN The Ciba Foundation with its world-wide reputation tries to bring people like ourselves together for fruitful discussions, which we must agree is an invaluable form of communication in science. This particular meeting is devoted to Joe Yoffey and the haemopoietic stem cell; it is about work in progress on a problem not yet completely solved. By the end of these two days we shall know better where we stand about the haemopoietic stem cells, but here I shall talk about Joseph Mendel Yoffey whom we are honouring on this occasion. To start in a rather formal manner, I quote one of his shorter communications -from Who’s Who, where he writes that he was born on the 10th July 1902, the son of Rabbi Israel Jacob Yoffey and Pere Jaffe. The rest of his career is listed, starting in 1926-1927 as a research fellow, continuing as a research scholar of the British Medical Association, a house surgeon at the Manchester Royal Infirmary, through the usual stages of assistant lecturer of anatomy and senior lecturer at Cardiff, and several Hunterian and Rockefeller professorships until finally he was Professor of Anatomy in Bristol from 1942 to 1967. In this list in Who’s Who there is a gap and as Yoffey is tremendously interested in numbers and quantification, I am intrigued by this gap: what was he doing in those three years? I very much regret the absence of A1 Gordon, who was to have been chairman on this occasion, because I feel he would have made a very much better job of telling you all about Yoffey than I. In fact, I feel singularly ill-equipped, because there are many people in this room who could have done it very much better from personal knowledge. However, Yoffey and I have, by Brownian movement, met on a number of random occasions over the last fifteen or more years and he seems to me to be the epitome of the dedicated university don; that is, he has two main attributes, teacher and research worker. I cannot speak about his qualities as a teacher but 1 can speak about his qualities as a research worker.
