She is also the Director of their Post-Master’s Certifi cate Program in the Clinical Approaches to Addictions. Among her 16 books are: Clinical Work with Substance-Abusing Clients (2nd Ed., Guilford Press, 2004—selected by Psychotherapy Book Club); U nderstanding Mass Violence: A Social Work Perspective (coedited with Norma Phillips; Allyn & Bacon, 2003); U rban Social Work: Policies and Practice in the Cities (coauthored with N. Phillips; Allyn & Bacon, 2002); International Aspects of Social Work Practice in the Addictions (coedited with Larry Harrison; Haworth Press, 2003); The Handbook on Women and Addictions (coedited with S. Brown; Jossey-Bass, 2002); Ethnocultural Factors in Addictions Treatment (Guilford, 2001); and G ender and Addictions: Men and Women in Treatment (coedited with E. Zelvin; Jason Aronson Press, 1997). She is the founding editor of the Journal of Social Work Practice in the Addictions (Taylor & Francis). Dr. Straussner has been a Fulbright Senior Scholar at the Academy of Labour & Social Relations in Kiev, Ukraine, a visiting professor at Warsaw University in Poland, and the recipient of the Lady Davis Fellowship to Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Previously, she was a Fulbright Senior Scholar to Israel (2003) and a Visiting Professor at Omsk State University, Siberia (2000). In June 2008 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the NYC Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) for her contribu- tions to the fi eld of addictions. Dr. Straussner served on the National Center on Substance Abuse Treatment panel on workforce issues, and was the Northeast Regional Director for federally funded multi- million dollar national Project Mainstream, an interdisciplinary project to improve health professional education on substance abuse. During 2005–2006, she chaired the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA) Social Work Initiative on developing core competencies for working with families and children affected by addiction. She is a past chair of the NASW Section on ATOD and vice president of the NYC Chapter of the NASW. Dr. Straussner has a private therapeutic and supervisory practice in New York City and lec- tures and consults throughout the United States and abroad. Christine Huff Fewell, PhD, LCSW, CASAC, is an adjunct associate professor at Silver School of Social Work at NYU, where she teaches in the areas of clinical practice and substance abuse and in the Post-Master’s Certifi cate Program in the Clinical Approaches to Addictions. She is codirector of the Specialized Substance Abuse and Co-Occurring Disorders Focused Learning Opportunity and Seminar. Dr. Fewell is Associate Editor of the Journal of Social Work Practice in the Addictions and a peer reviewer for the Clinical Social Work Journal . Recent publications include “Using a Mentalization-Based Framework to Assist Hard-to-Reach Clients in Individual Treatment” (in S. Bennett and J. K. Nelson [Eds.], Adult Attachment in Clinical Social Work: Practice, Research, and Policy. New York: Springer, 2010), I mpact of Substance Abuse on Children and Families: Research and Practice Implications (coedited with S. Lala Ashenberg Straussner, Haworth Press, 2006), 12-Step Groups as a Treatment Modality with Betsy Spiegel (in S. L. A. Straussner [Ed.], Clinical Work with Substance-Abusing Clients , 2nd Ed., Guilford Press, 2004), and The Mental Health Needs of Children of Alcohol and Substance Abusers (in U pdate, Newsletter of the New York State Chapter, NASW, September 2005). In June 2008, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the NYC NASW for her contributions to the fi eld of ad- dictions. Dr. Fewell has served on the New York State Board for Social Work and currently consults with students and faculty about licensing issues in New York State and conducts review courses related to the licensing exam. Dr. Fewell is a graduate and member of the Institute of Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR), and a Fellow of the International Psychoanalytic Association. She maintains a private practice providing psychotherapy and supervision in New York City and Hastings-on-Hudson.
