In order to give the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) real meaning and bring the articles to life, we must develop an understanding of what is meant by a ‘rights-based approach’ and examine how practical application can be asserted across our services. This textbook reflects the commitment of nursing professionals to children’s rights and expresses the intrinsic link between children’s rights and effective practice leading to positive outcomes. The book challenges boundaries of current practice in children and young people’s nursing and encourages a new generation of children’s nurses to become critical thinkers. Wales has a strong track record of recognizing the UNCRC. The National Assembly for Wales can be rightly proud of the legislation that it has passed which promotes and protects children’s rights, not least of which is the groundbreaking Rights of Children and Young Persons (Wales) Measure 2011, which requires Welsh ministers to have due regard to the UNCRC in everything they do. Guidance, regulations and policy emanating from the Welsh government have also reflected this commitment, often explicitly. The prob- lem facing child rights advocates lies in determining how to safeguard and enforce children’s rights when children may be unable to exercise them of their own will. The challenge therefore for all professionals working with children and young people is turning this commitment into improvements in the everyday experience of those children and young people accessing services. This book is a valuable contribution. The themes in the book take us back to the fundamental point that children’s needs are distinct and this must be recognized in practice. As Charles Lamb said, ‘A child’s nature is too serious a thing to admit of its being regarded as a mere appendage of another being’.* If we are to fully recognize Article 24 of the UNCRC, which recognizes the right to enjoy the highest attainable standard of health, children must be at the heart of healthcare planning and delivery, with all considerations and decisions ultimately focused on the child. Of course, the articles of the UNCRC are indivisible so as well as the central issue of the best interest of the child being at the core of what nurses do, we must also consider the voice of the child in all discussions. A suc- cessful model of provision of health services will have voice and choice within the rights-based framework. Edited by two highly experienced children’s nurses who have worked in higher education for a number of years, this book includes submissions from nurse practitioners, researchers and academics, covering issues most pertinent to children’s lives today. Chapters on safeguarding, child and adolescent mental health, par- ticipation and school nursing, among others, are interspersed with case studies from visionary practitioners. This edition is enhanced by new chapters on neonatal nursing, recognizing and supporting siblings’ needs and involving children and young people in research to inform service delivery at home and in hospital. Children’s and young people’s nurses have challenging, stimulating and rewarding careers. They play a vital role not only in providing direct care but also in promoting physical health and well-being. This should be on the must-read list of not just undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students but all practitioners who work with children and young people.
