Philip C. Kendall, PhD, ABPP, is the Laura H. Carnell Professor and a Distinguished Uni-
versity Professor of Psychology at Temple University, where he is also Director of the Child
and Adolescent Anxiety Disorders Clinic. Dr. Kendall has been a researcher, scholar, and
clinician for 35 years. His contributions include seminal work on the treatment of anxiety
disorders in youth; cognitive-behavioral theory, assessment, and treatment; research meth-
odology; and the conceptualization and understanding of the psychopathology and treat-
ment of children and adolescents. His over 450 publications include over 30 books and over
20 treatment manuals and workbooks. His treatments, such as the Coping Cat program for
anxious youth, have been translated into dozens of languages, and he has had over 20 years
of uninterrupted grant support from various agencies. He placed among an elite handful of
the most “highly cited” individuals in all of the social and medical sciences and ranked fifth
in a recent quantitative analysis of publications by and citations to all faculty members in the
157 American Psychological Association (APA)-approved programs in clinical psychology.
Dr. Kendall has been a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences
and has received numerous other awards, including the inaugural Research Recognition
Award from the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, a “Great Teacher Award” from
Temple University, a Philadelphia Magazine “top therapist” in the tristate area, and Dis-
tinguished Career Research Awards from the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psy-
chology (Division 53) and the Society of Clinical Psychology (Division 12) of the APA. He
has been President of the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology of the APA,
the Association for Advancement of Behavior Therapy (now the Association for Behavioral
and Cognitive Therapies), and the Child and Adolescent Board of the American Board of
Professional Psychology.
