Halley Project '96 Preface This volume brings together the papers which 33 radiologists, chosen among the leading European experts, presented at the Halley Project 1996 Refresher Course. The project, which I promoted and co-ordinated, started out under the aegis of the European Association of Radiology in 1992 with the aim of fostering the advancement of Radiology in various countries of Eastern Europe: Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland and Rumania. Thanks to the expertise and enthusiasm of distinguished colleagues from various countries in Western Europe and to the generosity of two sponsors, Bracco International and Schering A.G., it was possible to set up, in 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995. four Faculties of Experts in Uroradiology. Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology, Chest Radiology and Skeletal Radiology. These four faculties then gave a refresher course on the four radiological subspecialities in the six nations mentioned above. The project was called Halley, after the famous comet, in a desire to express the idea of spreading Western radiological culture among Eastern radiologists who were visited in their own countries. In these 4 years. as project leader, I accompanied the four Faculties during their tour and was thus able to experience the various local situations, not only in radiological terms but also socially. thanks to the ever warm relationships among radiologists of different nationalities and of different ages who attended the courses. The number of participants attending the Halley Refresher course increased steadily year by year, reaching an average of 200 radiologists in the last 2 years. The event became a national feast for Radiology, an opportunity for participants to meet each other and the various speakers who took part over the course of the 4 years. I was thus able to see first hand the culture and organisation of Radiology progressively developing in these countries, thus confirming that the project has achieved what it set out to do: bring Western and Eastern European Radiology into harmony. This year, the fifth in our activity, I wished to celebrate the event by inviting all the 33 speakers who took part in the four previous Refresher Courses to participate in a single refresher course which would review the four subspecialities in such a way as to update progress in each branch to 1996. For this reason I thought it was a good idea for us to all meet in a central Eastern European country: Hungary. an easily accessible venue for radiologists from the other five countries. Each Society of Radiology has chosen 50 of its members for these 4 days of radiological update. This was possible thanks to Bracco International who generously sponsored this initiative. which has the purpose of celebrating the union of radiologists, teachers and students from all over Europe. VI The European Union, which politicians have not yet achieved, is already reality in radiology! This sums up the spirit and the objective of the Executive Board of the European Association of Radiology. This volume, to which Bracco International wished to give a particular form, and which will be distributed on a wide scale, gathers together all the 33 lectures presented at this 5th Halley Refresher Course. They are excellent papers, which focus on the most up-to-date issues in radiology of the chest, gastro intestinal tract, skeleton and urinary tract. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the authors, who are among the leading experts in their subspeciality, for their expertise and generosity and who have made it possible to print this volume in real-time alongside the refresher course. The update will thus be also made available for all those who have been unable to take part in the Refresher Course. By reading this volume they too will be able to enter the spirit of the Halley Project. Finally thanks must be extended to the publisher, Springer-Verlag, for co operation in keeping to our strict time limits and for the high editorial quality of the final product. L.
