What then of Cheshire? The Footballers’ County? (only for outsiders looking in); The Science County? (yes, but we have so much other entrepreneurship to boast about); The Real Housewives’ County? (please, no). Perhaps in the not-too- distant, we might even be Harry Styles’ County? What’s your preference for a Cheshire byname? (Answers on an email to joanne.goodwin@ archant.co.uk) My suggestion is this: Cheshire —the Kindness County. Figen Murray, the mother of Martyn Hett, who died in the Manchester Arena bombing, spoke recently of her belief in the power of kindness: ‘I believe that even small acts of kindness make a big difference to individuals’ lives, she said. ‘Something as simple as smiling at a stranger > ae CHESHIRE THE KINDNESS COUNTY PLEASE DRIVE CAREFULLY when you catch their eye could impact in ways we may never know? And so it is with those this magazine is intent on honouring, including our 70 Platinum Jubilee champions. (Look out for their badges of honour as we continue to tell their stories.) There are myriad ways in which kindness manifests itself in Cheshire — from the shopkeeper who lets you off the loose change you don’t have on you, to the man in the supermarket queue who paid for the sausages my grandson and his friends were buying for a barbecue because they didn’t have enough cash. And most importantly, there are those who work tirelessly and fearlessly so others can thrive — Maggie Oliver, featured in this magazine, is among the best of these —- while Sue France (see page 92) is the ultimate enabler whose endless enthusiasm has, as one friend puts it, ‘brokered innumerable relationships for her contacts’. From the start of 2022 I have, in this column, sought out Reasons to be Cheerful. We’re in August, ergo, Part Eight, and working in the Kindness County is reason enough for me.
