Trademark caravel registered United States Patent Office FOREWORD Even in his own lifetime he was called Charles the Great—Carolus Magnus, Karl der Grosse, Charlemagne, in just some of the languages of people he ruled. In the long sweep of European history, from the decline of the Roman Empire to the flowering of the Renaissance nearly a thousand years later, his is the sole commanding presence. During much of this period, barbarians ranged about Europe, Christianity made only slow progress against paganism, and Western learning was in a state of eclipse. Looking back to these grim times, historians have written of the Dark Ages. Yet, however somber, the period was—momen tarily, at least—illuminated by Charlemagne and his brilliant court. From his father, Pepin the Short, Charles inherited only a part of the Frank ish kingdom—little more than half of modern France and the Low Countries. Before his astonishing career was ended, he had conquered half of Europe and his armies had marched through Italy, Germany, and Spain. In a glittering Christmas Day ceremony in Rome, in the year 800, he was crowned the new Roman Emperor. More than the heroic conqueror of Western Europe, Charlemagne was an intense and thoughtful human being. His succession of five wives brought him a palaceful of children. So warm was his love for his daughters that he could never bear to see them married away from the court, even though enticing alliances with other rulers were offered them. A deeply religious man, Charles became the protector of orthodox Christianity against medieval heresies and argued with monks and bishops about the fine points of Church doctrine. He loved to hunt and built a palace swimming pool in which to develop his aquatic talents. A patron of learning, he established schools and brought artists and scholars to his court to work and study. As a result, most classical literature comes down to us in copies of books made in Charlemagne’s time. Generations of writers and artists turned to Charlemagne’s career for inspiration; stylized representations of the great King and Emperor appear in manuscript illuminations made centuries after his death. Numerous examples of these exquisite works, along with statues, artifacts, and jeweled relics, pro vide rich illustrations to the following biography. The unity Charlemagne imposed on Europe did not long outlast his life time; the title of Holy Roman Emperor he so gloriously inaugurated degen erated into a meaningless label. Nevertheless, the glory of the Carolingian cul ture he fostered has long outlived his territorial gains.
