The appoint- ment of new deans in the School of Public Safety and Professional Studies and at our Southeastern Connecticut branch in Groton has brought a rebirth of energy and innova- tiontothosetwoentities.InGroton,thecon- solidation of many of our branch operations Intoonehandsomelocationhasadded tothe excitement. We have successfully expanded our out- reachontheinternationalfrontbywelcoming a sizeable number of students from Israel, Russia, and Asia. In addition, we have just completed a Strategic Plan update, which callsforsuchstepsastheselectionofcertain outstandingprograms tobemarketed asuni- versity "Showcase Programs" and a signifi- cant expansion of computing capabilities on campus. ClareR.Sweeney DSGPresident 2 Reflections t^'^i£:^^^^%iadfi?^MWSSX StudentActivities Being a student at the University of New Haven means having the best of both worlds-an active on-campus com- munity and the city of New Haven. Whether students are interested in cul- tural, intellectual or social pursuits, they have a wealth of opportunities from whichtochoose. Among the campus activities which have proved popular over the years are special theme weekends such as Fall Weekend and May Day. Whether it's buildingfloatsfortheFallWeekend'stra- ditional Homecoming Parade, or "gam- bling" at the ever popular Casino Night, or dancing out on the Maxcy Hall quad- rangle tobands under the May Day tent, there are plenty of ways to mingle with fellowstudentsandfriends. The student activities office sponsors a hostofperformances duringweekdays suchascomedynightsattheSportsSpot or big band events to keep things lively afterclassesareover. Students are also encouraged to de- veloptheir culturaland intellectual inter- ests by participating in literary, artistic and dramatic events. Visiting artists, play and concert productions, invited lecturers, forums and panel discussions are among the variety of programs that are available to students. Two cultural groups-Orchestra New England and the AllianceTheatre-are also in residenceon ourcampus. Reflections 3 '?MAiMM W-- SHARING SECRETS ABOUT UNH With Summer over, all Freshmen and TransferstudentsbegantheirFallSemes- ter sharing secrets about UNH. This year's events included a Family BBQ, Drive-in movie, Orientation Olympics and Dan LaRosa, the Humorous Hypno- tist. Thenew student orientationaims to welcome the new students, familiarize them with the campus and to introduce themtotheirclassmates.
