al-hadi.us CHAPTER OF IMAM ALI: INTRODUCTION AND CONTENT In this chapter, the reader will discover the true status and value of Imam Ali, who is a member of Ahlul Bayt. Many believe that the companions and Imam Ali have identical status, but this is also a fallacy propagated by people who want to lower the status of Imam Ali to fulfull their desires. Allah has bestowed many unique favors upon Imam Ali. He has given the Ummah many obligations they must fulfill towards him. Please take the time to read and absorb the narrations in honor of Imam Ali. These are narrations widely accepted by the Sunni and Shia'a scholars, but certainly not by the Nawassib whose desire and agenda is to either deny all his virtues or to belittle their importance. Imam Ali is not like any other companion. In short, Imam Ali is the closest one can get to prophet Muhammad in terms of knowledge, virtues, faith, purity, wisdom, piety, honor, heroism, closeness to Allah, dignity, dedication, devotion among many other things. Indeed, he is the most resembling of the prophet! He would have been the next prophet if proophet Muhammad was not the last one. This chapter contains the following topics: 1. Sending our blessing upon Imam Ali: Peace be upon him 2. The event of the closing of the doors: Narrations and conclusion 3. Imam Ali is from Ahlul Bayt, also known as Ahlul Kisa' 4. The Bearer of the standard 5. Hadith al-Mawaddat 6. Hadith al-Harb and Silm 7. Hadith al-Taweel 8. Hadith al-Muqatala 9. Conclusion 2 al-hadi.us IMAM ALI - PEACE BE UPON HIM The first virtue I would like to start with is the way you honor Imam Ali when you hear his name. As you may already know, whenever the name of Imam Ali is mentioned, the Shia'a say Peace Be Upon Him (A'alayhil salam). The same greeting is used for the prophets who preceeded the seal of prophethood. I was surprised to find that many of the Sunni scholars have done the same. There are those who say Peace Be Upon Him (like the Shia'a), there are those who greet him as they greet the companions by saying May Allah bless him (Radiyallah A'anhu), and there are those who greet him by saying May Allah Honor Him (Karam Allah wajhahu). The more elevated greetings (Peace Be Upon Him or May Allah Honor Him) show Ali's elevated status compared to the companions. There is and must be a reason behind such honorable greeting. This special form of greeting applies to all the members of Ahlul Bayt, except to the prophet to whom we say: Blessing and Peace be upon him and his progeny. To find all the related narrations regarding Ali (as), do the following: 1. Go to http://www.muhaddith.org/cgi-bin/e_Optns.exe 2. Type the following: ماسلا امهيلع or ماسلا هيلع. If your keyboard does not allow you to type it directly into the search text fields, click on the top keyboard icon. A scripted keypad will appear with all the arabic characters you need. Use the embedded keys to write your search criteria. Then copy paste it to one of the four search text fields. 3. Select one or more books for your search and click the "Start Search" button. I have many of the Sunni books in soft copy. So I did a search on the following combinations ماسلا هيلع بلاط يبأ نب (A يli لbعen Abi Talib peace be upon him), ماسلا هيلع يل(Aعli peace be upon him), ماسلا امهيلع يلع نب ن ي(Hسusحsein ben Ali peace be upon both of them), ماسلا امهيلع ايلعو ةم ط(Fاaفtima and Ali peace be upon both), ماسلا امهيلع يلع نب ن س(alح-Hلaاssan ben Ali peace be upon both of them). So here is the list of the scholars who honored Imam Ali as the Shia'a do: Imam Abul Hassan Ali ibn Ahmad al-Wahidi al-Nisaburi (Asbab al-Nuzul), Imam al-Qurtubi in Jami'i li-Ahkam al-Qur'an, Tafseer al- Baghawi, al-Imam al-Tabari in Jami'i al-Bayan and his Tareekh, al-Hakim in al-Mustadrak, al-Mubarakfuri in Tuhhfat al-Ahhudhi, ibn Qayyim in Tahdheeb Sunan ibn Dawud, Sunan ibn Dawud, Sahih al-Bukhari, Badriddeenn al-A'ayni in Umdatul Qari, Imam ibn Hajar al-A'asqalani in Fat-hhul Bari Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Muttaqi al-Hindi in Kanz al-U'ummal, Majma'ul Zawa'id by al-Haythami, Musnad Imam Ahmad, Musnad Imam al-Shafi'i, al-Zaylai'i in Nassbul Raya, Imam al-Sakkhawi in al-Maqassed al-Hassana, Abul Fadel al-Maydani in Majma'a al-Amthal, Abdul Rahman Shihabuddeen al-Baghdadi in Irshad al-Salek, ibn Qadama in al-Mughni, al- Sana'ani in Subul al-Salam, Imam al-Shukani in Nayl al-Awttar, ibn Katheer in al-Bidaya wal Nihaya, ibn Sa'ad in al-Tabaqat, ibn A'asakir in his Tareekh, Yussef ibn Muhammad al-Kanji, Sheikh Sulayman al-Qanduzi al-Hanafi in al-Yanabi'i al-Mawadat, Taqiyyuddeen al-Sabki in Fatawa al-Sabki, ibn Hazem al-Thahiri in al-Fasslu fil Milal wal Ahwa' wal Nihal, and many many many more. I believe this is widely enough. As you can see, the Shia'a are no unique in giving this form of honorable and elevated greeting to Imam Ali. This particularity in itself shows that Imam Ali is superior to the companions and that many of the scholars believed so in their hearts. But they keep saying, and I am paraphrazing the famous Sunni formula, no doubt this does not lower the virtues of Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman, as Abu Bakr is the best of the companions after the prophet, then comes Umar, then Uthman, then Ali! This is their famous formula. Does it make any sense??? How can someone who is told peace be upon him, just as it is told to the prophets, or even Karramallah Wajhahu, be inferior to the one who is told Radiyallah a'anhu?? Is this commonsense or nonsense?? As you shall see inchallah, Imam Ali is unique in his virtues, his character, his position in the eyes of Allah and His messenger. Just be patient. 1 al-hadi.us IMAM ALI - THE CLOSING OF ALL THE DOORS EXCEPT THAT OF ALI I am going to organize these narrations by companion. Please pay close attention to the comments of the scholars who considered this matter a historical fact, except of course for the likes of ibn Taymiya and his followers. The following is a long narration from Mustadrak al-Hakim in his (vol 3, #250/4652) in which Abdullah ibn Abbas tells his listeners some of the virtues of Imam Ali: Amru ibn Maymun was sitting with ibn Abbas when a group of nine people came to him. They said: "You either come with us or you get rid off these people." ibn Abbas said: "I come with you." Amru ibn Maymun said this was before ibn Abbas became blind. ibn Abbas said: "They have insulted a man who has tens of virtues no one has." Then ibn Abbas started telling narrating the virtues: "Allah will send someone He will never disgrace, he loves Allah and His messenger and Allah and His messenger love him (this is during Khaybar)... The prophet sent someone (Abu Bakr) to proclaim the chapter of al-Tawba, then sent Ali after him to take it from him as the prophet said: 'no one can proclaim this except he is from me and I am from him.' The prophet said: 'Who from among you will support me in this world and the hereafter?' No one answered. Then the prophet said: 'You are my supporter in this world and the hereafter.' ibn Abbas said: 'Ali is the first to believe in the prophet after Umna Khadija.' The prophet took his garment and covered Ali, Fatima, al-Hassan and al-Hussein and said: 'Allah only desires to remove the uncleanness from you O Ahlul Bayt and purify you a thorough purification.' Ali sold himself, he wore the clothes of the prophet and slept on his bed. Then Abu Bakr to the room of the prophet, while Ali was laying down in the prophet's place. Then Abu Bakr said 'O prophet of Allah' thinking the prophet was the one on the bed. Ali told Abu Bakr that the prophet went towards the well of Maymun, go catch up with him. Then Abu Bakr went and entered the cave with the prophet. The prophet said to Ali when he left for the expedition of Tabuk: 'are you not satisfied that your position to me is that of Harun to Musa? I shall not leave unless you are my Caliph.' The prophet said: 'you are the master of every believer after me' The prophet ordered all the doors of his companions closed except that of Ali who used to enter even while in the state of janaba, having no other way out. The prophet said: 'Whoever I am his master, Ali is also his master.' ... ةقايسلا هذهب هاجرخي ملو ،دانسإا حيحص ثيدح اودجي نأ مهبجعي ناك :لوقي يزارلا متاح ابأ تعمس :لاق ناطقلا ينيوزقلا هيورهم نب دمحم نب يلع نسحلا وبأ انثدح ،-هنع )3/144 :ص/ج( .-هنع ىلاعت ها يضر- لبنح نب دمحأ ةياور نم لئاضفلا al-Hakim said this narration is authentic and they (al-Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. This narration is also found in Musnad ibn Hanbal in volume 1 under the section titled Musnad Abdullah ibn Abbas ibn Abdul Muttalib. Ahmad Muhammad Shakir (contemporary scholar who graduated from and worked at Al-Azhar University, born in January 29, 1892 and died on June 14, 1958) revised the Musnad and said this narration was Sahih, then he explains who one of the subnarrators, Abu Balj is: Abu Balj's name is Yehya ibn Saleem and he is also known as Yehya ibn Abil Aswad and he is thiqa (trustworthy). ibn Mae'en considered him trustworthy, as well as ibn Sa'ad, al-Nisa'i, al-darqutni and others as well. In al- Tahdheeb (by ibn Hajar), it is said that al-Bukhari had an opinion about him, and I do not know where al-Bukhari he said this. al-Bukhari mentioned him in al-Kabeer and he did not criticize him, and he did not say anything about him in al-Sagheer, neither did he nor did al-Nisa'i mention him to be among the weak narrators. Shu'uba narrated from him and he does not narrate but from the trustworthy. Dr. Abdullah ibn Abdul Mohsin al-Turki revised the book of ibn Katheer and said this narration was sahih. al-Haffedh al-Haythami recorded it in Majmau'ul Zawa'id (volume 9 under Kitab al-Manaqib - Manaqib Ali ibn Abi Tali, #14696, page 158-159) and he said at the end: Ahmad recorded it, as well as al-Tabarani in his al-Kabeer and al-Awssatt in a shorter version. The men (subnarrators) of Ahmad are the men of al-Sahih (reliable), except for Abu Balj al-Fazari who is trustworthy but has some softness in hadith (wa feehi Layyin, which is the least severe level for the criticism of a narrator). 3 al-hadi.us نيل هيفو ةقث وهو يرازفلا جلب يبأ ريغ حيحصلا لاجر دمحأ لاجرو راصتخاب طسوأاو ريبكلا يف يناربطلاو دمحأ هاور ibn A'asakir also recorded it in his Tareekh and al-Tabarani as well in his Mu'ujam al-Kabeer (bab al-A'ayn). The reason Ahmad Muhammad Shakir gave this short description of Abu Balj is because some writers considered him weak. Shua'ayb al-Arna'ut, who also revised the Musnad of Ahmad said that this Isnad is weak: Its Isnad is weak. Abu Balj is actually Yehya ibn Saleem. Although more than one considered him truthworthy, al- Bukhari said: 'there is an opinion about him.' The most just of the sayings is that his hadith is acceptable if he is not the only one narrating it, as ibn Hibban said in his book al-Majruhheen. The content of this hadith comprises untrue and void wording as it desagrees with what is in the Sahih... He also quotes ibn Taymiya to have said: It has wordings that constitute lies against the messenger of Allah. Mr. Arna'ut, knowing that you are a staunch follower of your master, ibn Taymiya, the Sheikh of the Islam of Bani Umayya, I understand well your distorted analysis, if we can call it so. You and your masters are experts at rejecting all narrations related to the merits and virtues of the Ahlul Bayt of the prophet, namely Imam Ali, who is a thick thorn in your throats, and you are also experts at accepting and authenticating fabrications and lies about Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Mua'awiya, Yazeed and and all their likes, to elevate their fictional status. Every virtue in this narration has been accepted by the vast majority of the scholars of Ahlul Sunnah, but of course, you are not one them. You are a filthy and sick Wahhabi just like your masters whose function is to denigrate Ahlul Bayt and deny their God-given virtues. We shall see how helpful your masters will be to you when you all meet Allah and his prophet on the promised DAY. Which of these matchless virtues is bothering you?? Which Sahih are you referring to?? Are you referring to the Sahih of Mua'awiya or the Sahih of ibn Taymiya?? Are you denying that the verse of purification was not revealed in honor of Ali, Fatima and their two sons? Are you denying that Allah and his prophet love Imam Ali? Are you denying that Ali was the God-chosen one to conquer Khaybar?? Are you denying that only Ali is not from the prophet and the prophet from Ali? Are you denying that Ali is the supporter of the prophet in this world and the hereafter? Are you denying that Ali slept on the bed of the prophet on the night he left to Medina? Are you denying that Ali is to the prophet what Harun is to Musa? Are you denying that Ali is the Wali of every believer after the prophet? Are you denying that the house of Ali was the only house the prophet left its door open while he ordered the closure of all the other doors which face the mosque?? Are you denying that the prophet said to Ali: 'whoever I am hie master, Ali is also his master'?? These have all been accepted by the true scholars of Ahlul Sunnah, which you are not part of! As you have seen, many scholars have relied on the narrations of Abu Balj, such as al-Nisa'i, al-Darqutni, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, ibn Sa'ad. Is the problem of al-Arna'ut and his likes really with the subnarrator Abu Balj or is his real problem with Ahlul Bayt, and in particular Ali ibn Abi Talib? In the following narration, also from Musnad ibn Hanbal (volume 2, musnad of Abu Hurayra), and it has nothing to do with Ali or Ahlul Bayt, one of the subnarrators is also Abu Balj. Read the commentary of al-Arna'ut about this narration: The hadith is sahih with the part from under the Throne, and the Isnad is hasan, its men are trustworthy and are the men of the Shaykhayn (Muslim and Bukhari), and Abu Balj, known as Yehya ibn Abi Saleem, the authors of the Sunan narrated from him and he is saduq (reliable or believable) and narrates good hadith ميلس يبأ نب ىيحي وهو - جلب يبأ ريغو نيخيشلا لاجر تاقث هلاجر ،نسح دانسإ اذهو ،"شرعلا تحت نم" هلوق نود حيحص 4 al-hadi.us ثيدحلا نسح قٌودص وهو ،ننسلا باحصأ هل ىور دقف Do you see the double standard?? When the narrations relate to Ahlul Bayt, they are condemned as weak or fabrications. When they do not relate to Ahlul Bayt, the same people, who were condemned, become reliable! Like I said, I am not surpised at his distorted analysis. Have they not, these same people, considered the narration the Book of Allah and my Sunnah authentic while condemning many of the routes of hadith the Book of Allah and I'itrati Ahlu Bayti?? What can one expected from these deseased people?? They have a desease in their hearts. There is a book called al-Ahadith al-Mukhtara (this is the short name of the book). The long name transliterates to al-Mustakhraj minal ahadeeth al-Mukhtara mimma lam Yukhrijhu al-Bukhari wa Muslim fi Sahheehhihima, which means this is an extract of selected hadith not recorded in the Saheeh of Bukhari and Muslim. It is authored by Diya' al-Deen Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahid al-Sa'adi al-Maqdisi al-Hanbali (died in year 643). Dr. Abdul Malik ibn Abdullah ibn Dihish, who revised this book, said its authentic narrations, not recorded in the two Sahih, are considered a continuation of the narrations recorded in Sahih of Bukhari and Muslim. al- Dhahabi considered this book an extension to the two Sahih. Some scholars have even considered the authentication criteria of Diya' al-Deen al-Hanbali al-Maqdisi to be stronger than that of al-Hakim al-Nisabburi. In volume 7 of the book, page 131, he records the long narration of ibn Abbas. Muhammad ibn Yussef ibn Muhammad al-Kanji al-Shafi'i (died in year 658) recorded the shorter version of the narration of ibn Abbas in his book Kifayatul Talib Fi Manaqib Ali ibn Abi Talib in chapter 50: From Shu'uba from Abu Balj from A'amru ibn Maymun from ibn Abbas who said that the prophet ordered the closing of all the doors except for the door of Ali ibn Abi Talib." I say (Muhammad ibn Yussef): "This hadith is hasan. The prophet ordered the closing of the doors because doors of their dwellings (the companions) opened towards the mosque, and since the Prophet had forbidden everyone to enter the mosque in the state of janaba or haydd (menstruation), he forbade anyone to enter the Mosque and stay in there while in such a state, but allowed only Ali to remain in the Mosque when in this state (this privilege was peculiar to Ali only). This does not mean the prophet allowed Ali to do something that was known to be makrooh, but he (the prophet) did so because he knew that Ali was free from impurity, as well as his wive Fatima and his two sons, may the blessings of Allah be upon them, as the Quran has spoken about their purification in the verse Allah only desires to keep away the uncleanness from you, O people of the House! and to purify you a (thorough) purifying." al-Haffedh Abu Abdul Rahman Ahmad ibn Shua'ayb al-Nisa'i recorded the narration as well in his book Khassa'iss Ali and in clearer and more detailed fashion. Furtheremore, while al-Albani was discussing the different routes of hadith whoever I am his master, Ali is also his master in his book Silsilat al-Ahadeeth al-Saheeha, he mentioned the narration of ibn Abbas which has Abu Balj in it and said al-Hakim authenticated it, al-Dhahabi agreed to it and it is as they both said. Therefore, he also authenticated the narration. 5 al-hadi.us 6 al-hadi.us IMAM ALI - THE CLOSING OF ALL THE DOORS EXCEPT THAT OF ALI The following is the narration of Umar ibn al-Khattab who acknowledged this historical fact: Umar said: "Ali ibn Abu Talib was granted three qualities, had I had one of them, it would have been dearer to me than all red camels." What are they O leader of the believers? Umar said: "He married Fatima the daughter of the Messenger of Allah, the prophet made him dwell with him in the Mosque, allowing him what is allowed to himself, and (he gave him) the banner during the Battle of Khaybar." هاجرخي ملو Reference: • Mustadrak al-Hakim, vol 3, #230/4632 (31- ريمأ ماسإ ركذ << مهنع ىلاعت ه يضر ةباحصلا ةفرعم باتك هنع ىلاعت ه يضر- يلع :نينمؤملا-) • Kanz al-U'ummal, by al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, vol 13, #36376 (هنع ه يضر يلع لئاضف >> رشع ثلاثلا دلجملا) • Majmau'ul zawa'id by al-Hafidh al-Haythami, vol 9, #14699 • ibn katheer in his al-Bidaya wal Nihaya • ibn Asakir in his Tarikh (section 42, يلع همسا نم ءابآ يف ءاطلا فرح) al-Hakim said the above narration is authentic and they (al-Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. Ali ibn Abi Talib said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and his progeny, took my hand and said: "Moses had asked his Lord to purify His mosque through Harun, and I have asked my Lord to purify mine through you and your progeny." He then sent a messenger to Abu Bakr ordering him to close down his door which faced the mosque, and Abu Bakr responded expressing his desire to honour the Prophet's command. Then he sent another messenger to Umar to do likewise, and another to al-Abbas for the same purpose. Then he, peace be upon him and his progeny, said: "It is not I who has closed down your doors, nor have I kept Ali's door open out of my own accord; rather, it is Allah Who has opened his door and closed yours." al-Bazzar recorded it as well, and in the Isnad are some subnarrators I do not know. هنع ه يضر بلاط) • al-Bazzar, al-Muttaqi al-Hindi In the following narration, Ali ibn Abi Talib testifies to his virtues to the companions to prove that he is more worthy and more deserving of the caliphate than Uthman: Ali said: "has not Jibreel revealed to the prophet there is no sword but Dhul Fiqar and no youth but Ali. Was this revealed to anyone else besides me? Do you know that Jibreel came down and told the prophet that Allah ordered him to love me and to love whoever loves me, and that Allah loves Ali and loves whoever loves him?" They said 'Yes' Ali continued: "Do you know that the prophet said: 'when I was ascended to the seventh heaven...and many things were revealed to me and on my return, I heard someone say O Muhammad, a wonderful father you have, Ibrahim, and a wonderful brother you have, Ali.' Do you know this O Ansars and Muhajireen?" Abdul Rahman ibn A'awf said: 'I heard it from the messenger of Allah with these two...' "Do you know anyone besides me (among the companions) who was allowed to enter the Mosque in the state of Janaba?" They said No. "Do you know what whenever I was fighting on the right of the prophet, the angels would be fighting on his left?" Description:
The following is a long narration from Mustadrak al-Hakim in his (vol 3, #250/4652) in which Abdullah ibn Abbas tells his listeners some of the virtues of Imam Ali: . You are a filthy and sick Wahhabi just like your masters whose function is to denigrate Ahlul Bayt and deny their God-given virtues.
