Changemakers Changemakers reveals a startling new perspective on the family as it focuses on the largely unconscious factors that determine the use and abuse of power. Louis H. Stewart explores the many aspects of the family, looking in particular at the relation between birth order and political genius. He takes up the four basic sibling positions, shows how each is related to a corresponding style of political leadership, reviews the literature on birth order, and presents a study of American presidents and British prime ministers over some two hundred years. Stewart describes a fourfold cycle of creative change that occurs in every field of endeavour. It requires the contribution of individuals of genius who embody the viewpoints inherent in each of the four basic sibling positions: the last born is the rebel, finely tuned to the winds of change; the intermediate born is also frequently a rebel but, because of the vantage point between older and younger, a master of accommoda tion and mediation; the first born is the preserver, the extender and developer, the carrier of tradition; and the only child is the synthesizer, the carrier of the opposites, being both first and last. Stewart’s exploration takes place in the context of depth psychology and leads him to develop a new hypothesis about the nature and function of the emotions, which he sees as motivating and transformational forces that shape every kind of human development, creative and destructive alike. Stewart extends his study to look at the lives and family background of leaders who have been in the news, including Mikhail Gorbachev and Saddam Hussein. Of special interest to psychotherapists, psycho logists, political scientists and sociologists, Changemakers will also have a wide general appeal. Louis H. Stewart is an analyst member and former President of the C. G. Jung Institute of San Francisco. He is Professor Emeritus of Psychology, San Francisco State University, and is a Clinical Professor of Medical Psychology at the University of California at San Francisco.
