International Journal of Philosophy of Culture and Axiology 12(1)/2015: 159–172 Challenges to Frontier Allegories: the Caspian Sea Region in Southern Russia Liudmila Baeva Faculty of Social Communications Astrakhan State University, Russia, Tatischeva, 20 a [email protected] Anna Romanova Humanitarian Institute Astrakhan State University, Russia, Tatischeva, 20 a [email protected] Abstract. This contribution is devoted to frontier theory, the analysis of its conceptual apparatus as well as its topical issues and practical application. We propose a revision of this theory, and confront the usefulness of the term “frontier” with other the similar concepts such as border, boundary and limit. The paper also proposes a typology of frontiers characterized by various aspects; civilization, intercultural, religious, and anthropological, among other. From the standpoint of this discussion, the authors consider the Southern Russian bordering region of the Caspian Sea, today a much conflicted territory. Keywords: borderlands, Caspian Sea Region, frontier typology, frontier theory, Southern Russia INTRODUCTION The issue of studying the conditions in boundary areas is of interest to different disciplines within the Humanities and Social Sciences. Thus, this kind of research is usually interdisciplinary, covering disciplines such as history, cultural science, philosophy, political science, social science, economics, and so on. The origin of the theoretical study of borders can be traced back to Frederick Jackson Turner, a professor at University of Wisconsin who explored the colonization of America by the English and French and in his essay “The Significance of the Frontier in American History” formulated the ideas of what came to be known as “Frontier Thesis”. The essay was presented at the American Historical Associa- tion conference in 1893, and published later that year in Proceedings of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin and in the Annual Report of the American 159 Liudmila Baeva & Anna Romanova / Challenges to Frontier Allegories Historical Association. It was subsequently reprinted and incorporated in Chapter I of Turner’s 1921 book, The Frontier in American History. Turner believed that many, if not all, cultural traits related to North American individualism and its history of success, also known as “The American Dream” were directly related to the country’s Westward ex- pansion. In particular, he saw the arrival of the pioneers into the wilder- ness as fundamental in the creation of new environments. For Turner, these men and women released their mindsets from European models and dysfunctional habits and gave way to a special cultural type, charac- terized by his/her sense of practicality, optimism and unlimited oppor- tunity. This new frame of mind helped develop the belief in the power to tame the wild and stablish civilization with individual determination. The similarities of Turner’s evolutionary thesis of success and Euro- pean accounts of colonial expansion during the 19th century exemplify the particular “imperialist” approach characteristic of this historical peri- od, revealing the limits of Turner’s ideas which ignored gender and race, downplayed land scarcity and the wastefulness of natural resources, and left no room for ecological concerns, nor for the victims of the colonization (the local Indian communities in the case of the US). How- ever, his influence in the United States was such that by the time of his death in 1932, 60% of the leading history departments in American uni- versities were teaching courses in Frontier Theory (Bogue, 1994: 195). When considering territorial space, various terms with different attributes attached to them are in use. Some of the variations are in ac- cordance with linguistic etymology, and some are more frequently used in certain disciplines and less in others. Borders, boundaries, edges, ends, frontiers and limits are some of the terms used to split space into parts, zones, areas and territories. In their paper “Borders, frontiers and limits: some computational concepts beyond words,” Sébastien Gadal and Robert Jeansoulin propose the following classification, depending on the etymology of the terms: Tables reproduced from Gadal, Sébastien and Robert Jeansoulin. “Borders, frontiers and limits: some computational concepts beyond words.” Cybergeo : European Journal of Geography English Corresponding Etymology First meaning Derived Concept entry (French entry) words border [bordure] (old French an outer edge bordering to terminate bort, ship’s of something, (Fr. 160
