(DV) Luke 21:19 Translator's Note Not every reader of the German-language edition of Marie-Louise von Franz's C. G. Jung: His Myth in Our Time has understood the meaning of its subtitle. To those familiar with Jung's work, it will seem self-evident. To readers as yet unacquainted with analytical psychology, one might say, by way of explanation, that Jung lived a universal story, or myth; but he lived it individually, concretely, fully, and analytical psychology was born from this life, which was, of course, intimately bound up with the deeper spiritual problems of the age. My cordial and sincere thanks are due the author for her indispensable corrections and suggestions and for her encouragement; to my friend, Vernon E. Brooks, former Executive Director of the C. G. Jung Foundation, for months of hard work on the editing, the bibliography and the index; to Audrey Soracco, the Foundation's Managing Editor; and to William McGuire, Executive Editor of The Collected Works of C. G. Jung. Note of Acknowledgment For permission to quote from the Collected Works of C. G. Jung, Jung's Letters, edited by Gerhard Adler in collaboration with Aniela Jaffé, and Mircea Eliade's Shamanism, acknowledgment is made to Princeton University Press, publishers of these works in Bollingen Series in the United States, and to Routledge & Kegan Paul, publishers in the United Kingdom. For permission to quote from Memories, Dreams, Reflections by C. G. Jung, recorded and edited by Aniela Jaffé, acknowledgment is made to Pantheon Books, Inc., a division of Random House, New York, and Collins and Routledge & Kegan Paul, London. (As these editions have different pagination, both are cited. See Introduction, n. 4.)
