Evans, the pioneer of Centenary's program way back in 1975, continues his dual role of heading both the Ladies and Gents programs. Evans guided the Gent program from its inception through 1978, before returning at the start of the 1983 campaign. During his tenure, the Gents posted nine consecutive winning seasons (1983-91), including three straight Trans America Athletic Conference Championships. For his and the team's efforts, Evans was named the TAAC Coach of the Year for three consecutive seasons from 1988 to 1990. Last year, Evans guided the first ever Ladies program to a surprising 9-6-1 record. The season was highlighted by the Ladies' first NCAA Division I victory over Arkansas-L.R. Evans looks toward continued improvement in 1993 as the Ladies will play in full Division I status. Now in his 15th year at Centenary, Evans earned a B.S. in Health and Physical Education as a Gent in 1969. He received a master's degree in Education from the University of Georgia in 1970. A product of Herkimer (New York) Senior High, where he played basketball and baseball, Evans attended Hartwick (New York) College for two years before coming to Shreveport. He coached soccer and basketball for four years at Athens (Georgia) academy and then coached soccer and basketball at California Baptist (Riverside) for one season. Evans, 48, is the Superintendent of Athletics for Shreveport Parks and Recreation. He and his wife , Karen, have four sons - Chad, 27; Scott, 22; Trey, 9; and Brian, 7. Unlucky. That was the word used most often to describe the 1992 season- a season the 1993 Gents hope to bury in the past. With a number of injuries to key personnel and a general lack of offense, the Gents struggled to a 3-17 record and sixth place finish in the Trans America Athletic Conference, the worst finish by any Centenary team under Head Coach Glenn Evans in his 14 years at the school. The 1993 campaign will not be any easier as the Gents lose four starters from the '92 squad. Gone are 2nd team All-TAAC performers Keenan Paris (led team with 5 goals and 13 points) and Jamin DePrang (led team with six assists). Also missing will be a pair of three-year starters in midfielder Serge Hudson and defenseman Brad Sanders. Losing these starters and facing a schedule with 18 quality Division I opponents could cause many coaches to lose sleep at night, but Evans looks forward to the challenge with a balanced attack of young newcomers and proven veterans. "It's always tough to lose players of that caliber, but we have to overcome that," said Evans. "We have a lot of new faces who give us depth and will challenge for starting positions early, so the older guys are going to have to step forward and lead this team by example to regain the winning Centenary tradition." THE FORWARDS: Evans will look towards two players to revitalize an offense that scored only 25 goals all year in 1992. Junior Jona Husbands comes into the '93 season as the leading scorer among returning lettermen with 8 points (4 goals, Junior forward Jona Husbands battles for possession ^ assists). Sophomore Scott Garrick, the third leading scorer of the returnees with 6 against a pair of Hardin-Simmons defenders in the points (2 goals, 2 assists), could play along side Husbands up front or as an attacking Gents' 4-0 win last season. Husbands will again be midfielder. one of the main cogs in the Gents' offense this season mE MIDFIELD: midfield was the hardest hit> returning four letterwinners and only one starter. Junior Mike Arne started 18 of 19 games last year despite a nagging back injury that forced him to redshirt the 1991 season. Juniors Charles Mentesana and Joel Blakeney, along with sophomore Thuan Thai, will compete to fill the remaining two spots. THE DEFENSE: The Gents could be strongest in the back after losing only one starter. Senior Jason Phillips returns after starting all 53 games in which he has played during his Centenary career. Junior Josh Fairbanks comes in as a solid defenseman and the only player from last year's team to start in all 20 games. Senior Chris Garrett played well at the beginning of 1992 before a hamstring injury cut into his playing time. Sophomore Matt Thornton was steady in his first year as a Gent and started the final three games of the season. Senior Paul Berry will compete for a starting position after playing in 16 games last year. Kevin Rice, who redshirted 1992 after playing in three games as a sophomore, returns for 1993 and could also see time in the midfield. Sophomore Dell Taylor will also fight for time in the back. Senior Jeff Ramsey returns for his final year in the net after starting 14 games last season. The Fort Worth, TX, native posted a 2.87 G.A.A. last season and shared two shutouts. Sophomore David Orr should also compete for playing time. THE NEWCOMERS: Evans also signed forwards Craig Johnson (Duncanville, TX), Toby Maxson (Lewisville, TX), and Scott Yerby (Baton Rouge, LA) to help the Gents' scoring attack. The defense should be aided by GENT MILESTONES defenseman Ryan O'Leary (Katy, TX), Neal Williams (Plano, TX), Danny Warren (U. of Connecticut) as - Centenary earned a #10 ranking in the Midwest region by Soccer well as goalkeepers Tim Chastain (U. of Connecticut) America on Oct. 14, 1986— a first for the Gent program and Keegan McConnell (Dallas, TX). - Centenary has been ranked at least once in the Midwest Region Poll in THE SCHEDULE: The Gents will face six of the last seven years. TAAC champion Mercer as well as conference rivals - The Gents have posted a .500 season or better in eight of the last nine Stetson, Florida International, Georgia State, Central years. Florida, and the College of Charleston in regular season - In 1990, Centenary became the only school in TAAC history to win play. The winner of this round robin regular season three consecutive soccer championships! schedule will be the 1993 TAAC champion. - At the end of the 1987 season, Centenary was ranked 7th in the The Gents will also host non-conference foes Midwest Region (a spot they held three different weeks that fall.) St. Edward's, Texas Christian, North Texas, Southwest - Centenary led the NCAA in scoring in 1987 with 4.46 goals per Missouri State, and Memphis State, while they will hit game. Washington was second with 3.89 goals per game. the road for matches at Hardin-Simmons, SMU, - Over the past six seasons, Centenary has posted a 79-38-1 overall Jacksonville, South Alabama, and the St. Edward's record (.674)... and the Gents possess a 48-14 (.677) won-loss record at Tournament.
