"Agroforestry is an approach to land use that incorporates trees into farming systems
to accomplish environmental, economic and social goals, and allows forthe growing
oftrees and crops on the same piece of land."
The five types ofagroforestry practices recognized in Canada are: shelterbelts/
windbreaks, riparian buffers, silvopasture, alley cropping and forestfarming.
"iL'agroforesterie est un mode d'utilisation des terres qui intègre des arbres dans les
systèmes agricoles pour réaliserdes objectifs environnementaux, économiques et
sociaux, et qui permet la croissance des arbres etdes cultures sur la même
parcelle de terrain."

Inthelate 1ÔOOs,settlerswereillpreparedfortheharshandeverchangingclimatetheyhadtoendureinordertohomesteadon
thePrairies. Withlittleprotectionfromthewinds,thesummer'sheatandthewinter'sbittercold,thetreelessbackdropsoontook
itstollonboththefamiliesandthelivestock.ThelandanditshopefulbountywereatthemercyofMotherNatureandshecouldbe
relentlessinhercruelty.
TheCanadiangovernmentquicklyrespondedtotheplightofthesehardypeoplesandinthelate 1ÔOOs,theDepartmentofAgricul-
turebegantestingtreespeciesinBrandon, ManitobaandIndianHead,Saskatchewaninordertoprovidetreestoshelterprairie
dwellers.ApermanenttreenurserywasestablishedinIndianHead,SKin 1901,andin 1903,itsfirstyearofoperation,theCentre
handedout6,000treestoAAfarmersacrosswhatwouldbecomeSaskatchewanandAlberta.
Aswordspreadabouttheprovisionofshelterbelttrees,thereweremanyrequestsforseedlingstobeshippedouttofarmsbytrain,
horsedrawnwagon,andonhorseback.Today,aftermorethan 100yearsinoperationandhavingsurpassedanincrediblemilestone
ofthe600millionthtreedistributedin200Ô,theroleoftheCentreiseverexpanding.AspartofAgriculture&Agri-FoodCanada
(AAFC)andnowcalledtheAgroforestryDevelopmentCentre,theycontinuetoadministerthePrairieShelterbeltProgramwhich
distributesover4millionhardyseedlingseachyeartoover7000rurallandownersacrosswesternCanada.Thetreesareusedfor
anumberofenvironmentalbenefitsandservicesincludingprotectionofwater,soilandbiodiversity,mitigationofdustandodour
aswellassequesteringcarbon.Theyarealsousedtoprotectfarmyards,buildingsandlivestock,increasecropyields,reduceenergy
costsandtrapsnow.
TheAAFCAgroforestryDevelopmentCentrepromotesandsupportstheenvironmentalandeconomicbenefitsofplantingtreeson
Canada'sagriculturallands.Formorethan 11 years,theCentrehasrecognizedandaddressedthechallengesofmodernfarming
operations-firstonthePrairies,nowacrossthecountry-throughtheadvancementofnewmethodsanddesignsforestablishing
treesonagriculturallands.AgroforestryresearchanddevelopmentbytheCentreintreegenetics,landscapeimpacts,agroforestry
designs,andtreehealthandbiologyisprovidingthefoundationforthenextgenerationoftreeplanting.Workingwithpartnersand
clients,theCentrewillcontinuetoinvestinthefuture,integratingtreesintoagriculturallandscapestoprovideon-farmbenefits
forCanada'sagriculturalproducers,andquality-of-lifebenefitsforallCanadians.

plusde4millionsdeplantsd'arbresrobustesàplusde7000propriétairesdeterresruralesdansl'Ouestcanadien. Lesarbres
