TherenovationandrevitalizationofColebankHall,JaynesHall,andHardwayHall symbolize the needsofagrowingcollege, aswell asthe utilizationofitshistoric facilities. HardwayHall,theadministrationbuilding,hasbeenplacedontheNationalRegisterofHistoric PlacesbytheUnitedStatesDepartmentoftheInterior. In1993theCollegededicatedanewEducation,HomeEconomics,andHealthCareers buildinglocatedonthemaincampusandtheRobertC. ByrdNationalAerospaceEducation CenterinBridgeport,a40,000squarefootstructuredesignedtoprovideprogramsessentialto theaviationindustry.Inthefallof1999,theCollegeopeneditsnewGastonCapertonCenterin downtownClarksburg,a36,000squarefootfacilitywithclassrooms,naturalsciencelaborato- ries,computerlabs,conferencingareas,andamultipurposeroom.Inaddition,theCollegeopened a7,000squarefootfacilityatthe1-79TechnologyPark,whichwillhousecomputerlabsand trainingfacilitiestoaccommodateregionalworkforcedevelopmentneedsininformationtech- nologyandotherareas. TheCollegehasmadeasignificantinvestmenttoupgradeandmaintainitstechnology equipment,software,andinfrastructure.Campusbuildingsareinterconnectedbyfiberopticca- blingwithInternetaccessavailableinallclassrooms,offices,labs,andresidencehalls.Also,a wideareanetworkconnectstheGastonCapertonCenter,theRobertC.ByrdNationalAerospace EducationCenter,andthe1-79TechnologyParkfacilitywiththemaincampus. Inadditiontoemphasisonmodernfacilities,FairmontStateCollegehaspreserved andhonoreditstraditions.Aone-roomschoolmuseumonthecampusrecallsthedayswhenthe College servedasaprivateteachertraining school whichbegan in 1865. Itbecame astate- supportednormalschoolin 1867; seventy-sixyearslater,in 1943,itwasauthorizedtooffer bachelorofartsandbachelorofsciencedegrees. Academicexcellenceandpersonalgrowthandfulfillment,theprincipalpurposesofthe College, arecomplementedbyactivefinearts,publicationsandsportsprograms.Year-round contemporaryfilm,lectureandmusicseriesareimportantpartsofthesocialandculturalcalen- dar. TheCollege's90-acrecampuswithitstwelvemajorbuildingsisattractivelylocatedona hilloverlookingLocustAvenue,Route 19,inFairmont,WestVirginia.Approximatelyninety milessouthofPittsburghonInterstate79,Fairmont,withapopulationofabout20,000,isthe countyseatofMarionCounty. PhilosophyandObjectives FairmontStateCollege,anundergraduateinstitutionoperatingundertheauthorityofthe StateCollegeSystemBoardofDirectors,isgovernedbyitspresidentwiththeaidandadviceof itsInstitutionalBoardofAdvisors,administrators,FacultySenate,andStudentGovernment. Offeringcoursesofstudyleadingtobaccalaureatedegreesinthehumanities,socialand naturalsciences,teachereducation,business,industrialtechnology,andfinearts,theCollege alsoconductsprogramsofcareer-technicaleducationandgrantsaone-yearcertificateandthe degreesofAssociateinArts,AssociateinScience,orAssociateinAppliedScienceaftertwo yearsofstudy.Preprofessionalstudyisavailableinseveralfields,includingmedicine,dentistry, law,pharmacy,architecture,engineering,andphysicaltherapy.
