The original campus was housed temporarilyat St. Mary'sAcademy, locatedat Slauson and Crenshaw Boulevards in Los Angeles. In 1927, 36 acres in the Santa Monica mountains were purchased and becamethesiteoftheChaloncampus.Twentyyearslater,anadditional20acreswere acquired. Baccalaureate degree programs, including a Weekend College forworking adults,areofferedontheChaloncampus.Since 1929,morethan 11,000degreeshave beengranted. In 1962,theCollegeexpandedtoasecondcampusneardowntownLosAngeles,onthe siteofthehistoricDohenyestate.Centrallylocated,theDohenycampusenrollsmany students from East Los Angeles and the South Central areas ofthe city. Two year associate-in-arts degree programs, as well as graduate curricula, are offered on the Dohenycampus.TheCollege'sAssociateDegreeinNursing,likemanyotherprograms atDoheny,isdesignedinanevening/weekendformattoaccommodateworkingadults. MSMC is committed to providing educational opportunities to underserved women. The Dohenycampus accepts educationallydisadvantagedstudentsintothetwo-year "alternativeaccess"programforstudentswithunderdevelopedskills,whononetheless havedemonstratedpotentialtosucceedincollege.Rigorousacademiccourseworkand comprehensive support system:: ^ve made the programvery successful. More than halfofthosewhoenterthisprogramcompletetheassociatedegreeand/ortransferinto abaccalaureateprogram. MountSt.Mary'salsoattractssomeofthenation'smostwell-preparedstudents.Among recentgraduatesareaTrumanScholar,aFulbrightFellow,andRockefellerBrothers FundScholars. The College enrolls more than 1900 students on two campuses; men are admittedto undergraduatenursingandmusicprograms,thegraduatedivision,theWeekendCol- lege,andsummersessions. Characterization Of Mount St. Mary's College Mission Statement Mount St. Mary's College is an academic communitycommittedto continuingexplo- ration ofrelationship to God, other persons, and nature. This exploration takes the form ofprograms devoted to excellence in the liberal arts and sciences and career preparationattheassociate,baccalaureate,andmaster'sdegreelevels,withaspecial focus on education ofwomen for participation and leadership in our society and our times. The Religious Commitment TheCatholiccommitmentoftheCollegemanifestsitselfinmanyways. Thus, the College embodies Christian convictions supportive of livesofcommitmentandChristianconcerninasecularsociety. Distinctive Services SeveralfactorsemergefromthehistoryandenvironmentoftheCollegethatcreatea distinctivecommunity.Atrueacademiccommunitybecomespossible:thetotalcollege -notjusttheclassroom,theacademicmajororthecourse-isalearningenvironment. Historically, the College is a liberal arts institution with a special concern for the educationofwomen.However,menareadmittedtotheundergraduateMusic,Nursing, PhysicalTherapistAssistantmajors,theHOPEProgramandWeekendCollegeaswell asourgraduateprograms. The current enrollment at the college is approximately 1900 students. The Chalon campusprimarilyoffersbaccalaureateprogramsinliberalartsandsciences,Nursing aswellasamastersprograminPhysicalTherapy.TheDohenycampusoffersavariety ofprogramsrangingfromassociatethroughgraduate. StudentAffairs Onbothcampuses,the StudentAffairs areasponsorsawidevarietyofactivities and servicesrangingfromopportunitiesforparticipationinreligious,social,andleadership programs to health services, career counseling, and student government. Family Education Rights and PrivacyAct MountSt.Mary'sCollegefullyconformswiththeFamilyEducationRightsandPrivacy Act(theBuckleyAmendment)of1974.Inaccordancewiththisact,officialrecordsare madeavailabletostudentsandarenotmadeavailabletooff-campuspersonsoragen- cies withoutthe express consent ofthe student, except under legal compulsion or in casesinwhichthesafetyofpersonsorpropertyisinvolved,orforeducationalimprove- ment. THE COLLEGE 8 Legal Responsibility ofthe College Thecollegeendeavorstosafeguardstudentsintheuseofphysicalfacilities,laborato- ries, and athletic equipment. It is clearly understood that students who use college facilities do so entirely at their own risk. The college has no legal responsibility for injuryorotherdamagessufferedbystudentsonoroffcampus,orintraveltoandfrom suchactivitiesorforanyexpensesinconnectiontherewith. The Alumnae Association TheAlumnaeAssociation supportsthe missionandgoals ofthe Collegebystrength- eningthebondofloyaltybetweentheCollegeanditsformerstudents.Thisrelationship is maintainedbycommunications,continuingeducation, socialevents, andfundrais- ing. TheAlumnaeAssociationisamemberoftheCouncilforAdvancementandSupportof Education. Its membersqualifyformembershipin theAmericanAssociationofUni- versityWomen;theInternationalFederationofCatholicAlumnae;KappaGammaPi, thehonorsocietyforoutstandinggraduatesfromCatholiccolleges;andDeltaEpsilon Sigma,honorsocietyforgraduatesofCatholicuniversitiesandcolleges. Degree Programs Associate Degree Program Through the Associate in Arts Program students have the opportunity to develop academic competencies and enhance their self-developmentthroughinvolvementon andoffcampus. Facultyandstaffofferexcellenceintheirspecializedfieldsandshow concernfortheindividualstudent. CoursesofstudyareofferedwhichleadtodegreesinBusiness,EarlyChildhoodEdu- cation, Liberal Arts, Nursing, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Physical Therapist Assistant,orPre-HealthSciences. AllstudentsenteringtheAssociateDegreeProgramarerequiredtocompleteabattery oftestswhichincludereading,writing,andmathpriortoregisteringforclasses.Four semestersareusuallyrequiredtocompletetheA.A.degree,studentswithdeficiencies inmathematicsorEnglishskillsmayneedoneortwoadditionalsemesters. Thisprogramisdesignedtopreparestudentsfordirectentryintoacareeraftergrad- uation or for transferto a baccalaureateprogramon the Chalon Campus or another institution. Bachelors Degree Programs MountSt. Mary'sCollegeofferscoursesofstudyleadingtothedegreesofBachelorof Arts, Bachelor ofMusic, and Bachelor ofScience. Primarilythese are offered at the ChalonCampus.
