100 BulletinofZoologicalNomenclature48(2)June1991 Case 2765 PhyllodoceLamarck, 1818 and PolyodontesdeBlainville, 1828 (Annelida, Polychaeta): proposedconservation FredrikPleijel SwedishMuseumofNaturalHistory Box50007, S-10405 Stockholm, Sweden , Abstract.Thepurposeofthisapplicationis toconservePhyllodoce Lamarck, 1818 as the name for a genus of marine polychaetes. It is threatened by the unused senior homonym Phyllodoce Ranzani, 1817, which is also a senior objective synonym of PolvodontesdeBlainville, 1828. 1. Ranzani (1817a, p. 109) established a genus Phyllodoce for the single species Phyllodoce maxillosa, which belongs to the acoetidae Kinberg, 1858 (previously known as polyodontidae Augener, 1918). A description ofthis genus and species was pubUshed also by Ranzani (1817b, p. 1456), where he mentioned the previous paper. 2. For a different polychaete, Lamarck (1818, p. 316) established the genus Phyllodocewith the singlespecies Phyllodocelaminosa. Lamarck referred theauthor- ship to 'Sav. Mss.', presumably indicating Savigny's manuscript of Description de I'Egypte, and subsequent workers havegenerally referred the authorship to Savigny, althoughnoconsensusontheyearofpublicationwasreached. However, therelevant pages(pp. 13,28,42,43,45)werenotpublisheduntil 1822(seeOpinion 1461,BZN44: 220) so Lamarck (1818) is the author. Although Lamarck's description is very brief, therearenodoubtsastotheidentityofhisspecies. 3. PhyllodoceLamarck, 1818presentlyencompassesbetween 100and200nominal species(dependingonhowthegenusisdemarcated; see, forexample, Pleijel, 1991, in press; Ushakov, 1972, p. 124and Fauchald, 1977, p. 50). Orsted (1843, p. 25)erected thefamily-groupnamephyllodocidae(as 'Div. Phyllodoceae') based on Phyllodoce Lamarck, 1818(butreferredbyOrstedtoSavigny). Boththegenericandfamilynames arethreatenedbytheseniorhomonymPhyllodoceRanzani, 1817. 4. DeBlainville(1828,p.461)citedPolyodontes,anamederivedfromamanuscript by Renieri, in the synonymy ofPhyllodocemaxillosa Ranzani. This has been consis- tently used since and is available under Article 1le ofthe Code, with de Blainville as author(see, forexample, Fauvel, 1923,p.96andPettibone, 1989,p.98).Alistofnine furtherreferenceshasbeengiventotheCommissionSecretariat. 5. Since de Blainville (1828) the generic name Phyllodoce Ranzani, 1817 does not appear to have been used as a valid name. This is probably due to uncertainties concerning thedate ofpublication ofRanzani'sand Savigny's works, and Ranzani's namehasgenerallybeenregardedasajuniorratherthanaseniorhomonym.Ranzani's description is fairly detailed and there is a risk that his name may be revived. Since this seniorhomonym is unused strictapplication ofpriority wouldcause unduecon- fusion and instability ofnomenclature. It is desirable to retain the commonly used ) BulletinofZoologicalNomenclature48(2)June1991 101 names Phyllodoce Lamarck, 1818, phyllodocidae Orsted, 1843 and Polyodontes de Blainville, 1828,andtosuppressPhyllodoceRanzani, 1817. 6. The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature is accordingly asked: (1 touseitsplenarypowerstosuppressthegenericnamePhyllodoceRanzani, 1817, and all uses of the name Phyllodoce before the publication of Phyllodoce Lamarck, 1818, for the purposes of both the Principle of Priority and the PrincipleofHomonymy; (2) toplaceontheOfficial ListofGenericNamesinZoologythefollowingnames: (a) Phyllodoce Lamarck, 1818 (gender: feminine), type species by monotypy Phyllodocelaminosa Lamarck, 1818; {h) Polyodontes de Blainville, 1828 (gender: masculine), type species by monotypyPhyllodocemaxillosaRanzani, 1817; (3) toplaceontheOfficial ListofSpecificNamesinZoologythefollowingnames: (a) laminosa Lamarck, 1818, as published in the binomen Phyllodoce laminosa (specificnameofthetypespeciesofPhyllodoceLamarck, 1818); (b) maxillosaRanzani, 1817,aspublishedin thebinomen Phyllodocemaxillosa (specificnameofthetypespeciesofPolyodontesde Blainville, 1828); (4) to place on the Official List of Family-Group Names in Zoology the name PHYLLODOCIDAEOrsted, 1843(typegenusPhyllodoceLamarck, 1818); (5) toplaceontheOfficialIndexofRejectedandInvalidGenericNamesinZoology thenamePhyllodoceRanzani, 1817,assuppressedin(1)above.
