COLLEEN DIGNAM MIKE YORKE GEMMA BEIS Woodbridge, ON L4L 9T2 MeSSage FROM THe E.S.T. MEssagE fRoM THE E.S.T. Ucal Powell, Executive secretary Treasurer Dear Brothers and Sisters, After almost 25 years in your employ, 22 of which I led the organization, I have decided to retire effective December 31st, 2013 of this year. First and foremost, I would like to thank you for your support over those years. As I reflect back on my early years at the realm, I think of the challenges of the first half of the nineteen nineties when we were facing record unemployment with almost 50 percent of our members unemployed. Those were trying years, indeed. It was your unwavering support that sustained me. I recall two brothers came to see me one day to chat about the terrible state the industry was in. They said “Ucal, you took over this organization at the worst time possible”. It was words like those that strengthened my resolve to never waver in my commitments and to do everything in my power to make our organization strong and stand head and shoulders above the rest. I am sure you will agree that we have come a far way. Just about all our local unions across the province now have training centres to train our members for the industry needs. We have developed strong relationships with industry partners that have directly benefited our members. Looking back, I think you will agree we all did well. I know you will give the new Executive Secretary Treasurer the same guidance and support you gave me. So, as I say farewell from active duty, I extend best wishes to you and your family for a holiday season full of laughter and joy. In Solidarity, Ucal Powell Executive Secretary Treasurer 4 Trade Talk www.carpentersunion.ca Trade Talk www.carpentersunion.ca 5 WSIB UPDaTe 6 Trade Talk www.carpentersunion.ca POLITICAL ACTION Trade Talk www.carpentersunion.ca 7 FEATURE aRTICLe 8 Trade Talk www.carpentersunion.ca Trade Talk www.carpentersunion.ca 9 ORGANIzING DIRECTOR’S MeSSage oRgaNIZINg DIRECToR’s MESSAgE Carlos Pimentel, Director of organizing Brothers and Sisters, Once potential members believe in themselves, in what the Carpenters’ Union can offer them and their As we come to the end of another year, it is a time for us to families, then it becomes easy for new members to sign reflect on 2013, as well as to make plans for the New Year. a card and support our passion for the future.
