They could ride part of the way in trains, but the trains did not go very far into the wild country. So the people had to ride on horseback and in covered wagons. Steamboats took them down big rivers and across lakes. Caroline's adventures are the kind of adventures that might have happened to a girl who lived long ago, around the year 1839.
