CAROLINA FOOTBALL qSt WELCOME BACK • For the first time since 1956, Carolina's head coach is a for- mer letterwinner. John Bunting, a ferocious linebacker who earned AII-ACC and honorable mention All-America honors in 1971, played 11 years in the NFL and was an NFL assistant coach for eight years. He was named Carolina's 32nd head coach on December 11, 2000. THE SPICE OF LIFE • All-America Julius Peppers and record-setting quarterback Ronald Curry will spice things up this fall for the Tar Heels. Peppers, the nation's sack leader in 2000, is a preseason candidate for the Lombardi and Nagurski Awards. Curry, who established the single-season school record for total offense last year, is on pace to shatter several Carolina career records. TOP COMPETITION ' Carolina plays one of the most challenging schedules in the nation this season with non-conference games against Oklahoma, Texas, East Carolina and SMU. • In future years, the Tar Heels face top competition with games against Notre Dame, Colorado, Wisconsin, Texas, Virginia Tech, Syracuse, Michigan and Louisville. LINEBACKER LEGACY • Over the past 32 seasons, Carolina linebackers have been selected all-conference 32 different times. Head Coach John Bunting (1971) was one of those selections. This year, sen- iors Merceda Perry and Quincy Monk look to continue the Tar Heels' linebacker legacy. ALL-AMERICAS • Carolina has produced at least one first-team All-America every year since 1995, including 2000 selection Julius Peppers. • Peppers is a preseason first-team All-America in 2001 • Dre' Bly, Carolina's all-time interception leader, is the only player in ACC history to earn first-team All-America honors in three different seasons. He was a consensus All-America in 1996 and 1997. WINNING SEASONS • Carolina has posted a winning record in I0~of the last 11 seasons. Last year, Carolina became just one of 21 schools NCAA in history to win 600 games. Carolina's all-time record is 600-425-54. NFL AND CAROLINA • Carolina is the only ACC school to have at least one player selected in every NFL Draft since 1971 •Atotal of 35 former Tar Heels are currently in the NFL (as of July 1, 2001); 71 percent of Tar Heel players on NFL rosters have graduated from UNC (compared to the NFL average of 47 percent). ) 2001 CAROLINA FOOTBALL d TABLE OF CONTENTS GENERAL INFORMATION/PREVIEW Michael Harris, Robert Harris, Quick Facts 2 Madison Hedgecock, Zach Hilton 61 Media Information 4-6 Adam Holland, Errol Hood 62 Campus Map 7 Luke Huard 63 Primary MediaOutlets 8 LarryJessup, DerrickJohnson, 2001 Schedule 9 KitwanaJones 64 Previewing theTar Heels 10-14 MarcusJones, Kevin Knight 65 2001 Positional Breakdown 15 John Lafferty,Aaron Leak, Jeff Lloyd 66 2001 Numerical Roster 16-17 Cory Locklear, Brandon Lugabihl, 2001 Alphabetical Roster 18-19 Bryant Macklin, Landon Mariani 67 2001 Preseason Depth Chart 20 David Mcintosh, Willie McNeill, Kenan Stadium 21-23 Adam Metts 68 Tar Heel Sports Network 24-26 Quincy Monk 69 Isaac Montgomery, Richard Moore, THIS IS CAROLINA FOOTBALL Issac Mooring, Issac Morford 70 i Kenan Stadium Experience 28-29 Willie Parker 71 Kenan Football Center 30-31 Julius Peppers 72 Outstanding Coaching 32 Anthony Perkins 73 jfc I Strength & Conditioning 33 Merceda Perry, Don Peters 74 2001 QUICK FACTS CUanirvoelrisniaty&oTfhNeorNtFhLCarolina' 3348--3379 TToopnhyePrigRfoobredr,tsJe,ffPaRueledR,obDeerxtts,er Reid 75 Location: Chapel Hill, N.C.
