When the Gwinn’s decided to get out of the Angus business in 1995, Kevin and Lydia purchased part of the Congaree cowherd and started Yon Family Farms when they moved to Ridge Spring in 1996. Yon Family Farms is definitely a family-owned and operated integrated purebred Angus operation with three generations living and working on the farm. Kevin’s parents Phil and Barbara live on the farm, Sally and Drake have returned to the farm after graduating from Clemson, and Corbin will return after graduation this May. A strong, definite plan and a lot of hard work have grown YFF from a small group of cows and 100 acres in 1996 to one of the largest and most elite Angus breeding programs in the breed. The American Angus Association reported in December that Yon Family Farms is the 6th largest Angus operations in the country with 1,034 head registered. BEEF magazine ranks YFF as the 39th largest purebred operations on all breeds in 2015. WOW! Their first bull test at Congaree consisted of 12 hand-fed bulls and the following sale was a silent auction conducted on signup sheets and a yellow pad. Twenty years later, it takes both spring and fall production sales, the Carolina Futurity, the Saluda Heifer Sale and private treaty female sales each year to market their genetics. Thru these sales, YFF has sent five bulls to AI studs for use all across the country. Ever since I started working with them back in 1988, both Kevin & Lydia have served their community, church, county and state. They have served on boards, advisory panels, associations and gave presentations all over the country ranging from the Ridge Spring Fire Department, Saluda Cattlemen’s Association, SC Cattlemen’s Association, Beef Improvement Federation, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, SC Angus Association and the American Angus Association. Kevin served as president of the SC Cattlemen’s Associa- tion and of the SC Angus Association. He served two 3-year terms on the national Beef Improvement Federation Board of Directors and is currently serving his second 3-year term on the American Angus Association Board of Directors. As an AAA Board member, he was chairman of the Angus Genetics Inc. committee in 2014, chairman of the Certified Angus Beef committee in 2015 and is currently Treasurer for 2016. Kevin and Lydia have shared their knowledge and experience in the Angus business by hosting interns nearly every year since they started in the business. These interns have been students from Clemson University plus Angus juniors and college students from across the country. Several have stayed or returned to Yon Family Farms in permanent positions. They served as junior advisors for many years and helped coordinate a couple of Southeast Regional shows. I know all SC Angus Association members that have attended the Carolina Futurity during the last 25 years have seen Lydia clerking the sale and Kevin working the ring every year, as well as consigning some of the top lots. Sally, Drake and Corbin have continued the family legacy of service to the breed by helping with the Futurity in the ring, in back moving cattle and with the Silent Auction. All three have served as president of the SC Junior Angus Association. Sally has been Miss American Angus in 2012 then served on the American Junior Association Board of Directors. Yon Family Farms have made many significant contributions to the genetic improvement of the Angus breed and the commercial cattle industry locally and across South Carolina, the Southeast and the country. Please come and help us honor Kevin and Lydia at our Annual Meeting on March 18th and the 45th Carolina Futurity on March 19th. 1 South Carolina Angus Association 2049 Boyd Rd, Blackstock, SC 29014 Sharon Furr, Secretary, 704/577-3639 Welcome to the 45th Annual Carolina Futurity.
