You need these life givers and life extenders in adequate supply in your daily food program. They hold the key not just to survival, but also to healthy self-rejuvenation. You need protein for life, and the amino acids are the building blocks of protein. To help you enjoy the best of life and health, you need to give your body a special balance of these amino acids. Any imbalance, however slight, can create problems. A missing amino acid is like a missing building block. The entire structure may threaten to collapse because of a single weakness. For example, you may enjoy a corn-based diet, but corn is deficient in tryptophan, and this deficiency can cause emotional disorders and insomnia. If you add grains, seeds or nuts to the corn, you will provide the tryptophan necessary for brain nourishment. Amino acids are found in all protein foods; but they have to be "complete," i.e., in complementary balance, and in sufficient quantities and potencies so that they work together with equal vigor in building and maintaining health. Complete amino acids are commonly found Page 2 in animal products such as meat, fish, eggs, poultry and dairy products, but a daily diet of these fatty and high-cholesterol foods might be unwise. Your goal is therefore to eat a variety of foods from animal and non-animal sources for balanced nourishment. With the proper combinations, you can obtain amino acids in proper balance from meatless sources, if you wish. In so doing, you will protect yourself against fat and cholesterol overload but you will still be adequately nourished. Amino acids build and maintain all body tissues; they constitute an important part of enzymes, hormones and body fluids. They are responsible for regulating body functions such as growth and digestion. They help form antibodies to fight infection. In this book, you will discover that protein has the power to give you extended youth. But you will also learn that amino acids are the life- giving components of protein and essential in your quest for optimal health.
