To answer the question “What are the characteristics of a good learner of native language?”, an investigation was carried out in the Liberal Arts/ Language Course (“Letras”) at Universidade Estadual de Maringá, state of Paraná, Brazil, in 1995, using one of the undergraduate students as subject. The aim of the investigation was to find the characteristics of the good learner and their implication in teaching and learning the native language. Applied Linguistics was the theoretical support for this study. The results demonstrated the existence of fifteen characteristics, besides the eight proposed by the literature. RESUMO: Conhecer as características de um bom aprendiz em língua materna possibilita ao professor ampliar seus conhecimentos sobre o processo ensino-aprendizagem, alterar suas práticas teórica e pedagógica e auxiliar outros aprendizes. Para responder à questão “Quais as características de um bom aprendiz em língua materna?”, foi conduzida, em 1995, pesquisa no curso de Letras da UEM-PR, utilizando-se um de seus acadêmicos como sujeito de investigação.
