Candidate for President Kenneth McMillin Candidate for 2017-18 Faculty Senate President Ken McMillin, Professor of Animal Sciences As the Mr. and Mrs. Herman E. McFatter Professor of Animal Sciences, I conduct research in animal growth and influences of production practices, processing, and packaging on meat properties and teach meats, meat technology, and contemporary issues in animal sciences courses. My approach to leadership is to serve as a liaison with constituencies of faculty members, administration, staff, students, and the university community to convey faculty positions and opinions on academic and institutional issues and concerns. My personal style is to gather information, seek input from informed individuals, and examine the situation from all sides before choosing a decision or action that serves faculty interests while considering the effects on other factions. I’ll strive to emulate previous Faculty Senate presidents in achieving rapport with higher administrators, faculty senators, staff representatives, and student body officers while improving the communication flow between the Faculty Senate, Faculty Senate committees, and the university community. My commitment is to advance faculty causes and participation. This includes furthering faculty governance, improving graduate education, revising outdated or unclear university and campus policies and procedures, and invigorating college faculty policy committees and faculty participation in all aspects of the university. I will strive to initiate and maintain activities that serve the best interests of the faculty and the institution and to provide appropriate direction for educational policies at LSU as charged by the LSU Board of Supervisors Bylaws. As a faculty member familiar with many of the different academic and structural elements of LSU, I have advised more than 20 faculty members on personnel issues and been the peer faculty advisor in the most recent two PS-104 dismissal for cause hearings. Service as the Faculty Senate Vice President for the past 6 years followed 3 terms on the Executive Committee as a Member-at-Large. I have been a College of Agriculture Senator in 1990-93, 2005-08, 2009-12, and 2015-18 and since 2010 I have initiated eight Faculty Senate Resolutions. My involvement with Faculty Senate Committees has included terms on the Courses and Curriculum; Review and Long Range Planning; Grievance (chair); Ad Hoc Crisis Response; Admissions, Standards, and Honors (chair); Student Aid and Scholarships, and Commencement Exercises (chair) committees so I am conversant with the importance, roles, and responsibilities of Faculty Senate Committees. Since 2010, I have been selected to serve on university committees for Financial Exigency Rightsizing and Budgetary Changes, Associate Vice Chancellor for Human Resource Management Search, Executive Search Services Proposal Evaluation, Leveraging Innovation for Technology Transfer Request for Proposals Development, Human Resource Management Selection of LSU First Third Party Administrator, Graduate Dean Search, Administrative Process Improvements, PS-104/109 Revision, President and CEO of LSU Foundation and Vice President of Institutional Advancement Search, and the LSU Strategic Plan Operations Excellence Subcommittee. In the College of Agriculture, my activities have included being Chair of the Agriculture Faculty Council for 6 years, and serving on the College of Agriculture Name Change Consideration, Outstanding Dissertation Selection, College Policy, Tenure and Promotion, International Activities, and Ag Week Coordination Committees. These activities have given me insight and experiences on the administrative aspects of the university. I have represented the LSU faculty as a delegate to the Conference of Louisiana Colleges and Universities; moderator and panelist for the Professional Academies Panel Discussion for the LSU Presidential National Symposium Moment or Movement: A National Dialogue on Identity, Empowerment, and Justice for All; and representative to the Board of Regents Stakeholder Engagement Process with the Deloitte Consulting Group. Each of these has allowed interaction and conversations with faculty members from other institutions to broaden my perspectives of the roles and contributions of faculty. My professional activities include being Editor-in-Chief of Meat and Muscle Biology, on the Professional Animal Scientist Editorial Board, ad hoc member of the American Meat Science Association (AMSA) Board of Directors, and member of the American Meat Processors Association, AMSA, American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists, American Society of Animal Science, Council on Agricultural Science and Technology, Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), International Association for Food Protection, and North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture. Recognitions include being a Diplomate in the American College of Animal Sciences, Professional Animal Scientist, Fellow of AMSA, Fellow of IFT, and a Fulbright Senior Specialist. My participation on many committees and/or as an officer within these organizations has expanded my views of interdisciplinary collaborations, made me more respectful of the opinions of others, and allowed me to critically my abilities and contributions.
