untilthebeginningofthe20thcentury,wereimportanttriggersintheunderstanding of immunological mechanisms. In contrast to infectious diseases, reports of aller- gies and cancers were less common, but increased tremendously within the last century.BasedontheUSmortalitydataoftheNationalCenterforHealthStatistics, CentersforDiseaseControlandPrevention2009,arecentreportfromtheAmerican CancerSocietyindicatedthatthenumberofcancerdeathsincreasedapproximately from100,000to550,000peryearbetween1930and2006,parallelingtheincrease of the total population during this period. Leading causes of death from cancer are lung and bronchus cancer, in men prostate cancer, and in women breast can- cer [1, 2]. Normalization to population size shows that the cancer death rate for mostmalignancieshasbeengenerallystable, althoughthemortalityrateofcertain malignancies,suchaslungandbronchuscancer,hasincreasedoverthelast50years [1-3]. Inallergy, thesituationislessclear, becauseforthetimeperiodaroundtheturnof the19thcentury,onlyimpreciseinformationisavailable.However,withinthelast30 yearstheincidencesofallergieshasdoublednotonlyinindustrialcountries, butin developingcountriesaswell[4].Fromthediagnosedatopicstateitisconcludedthat insomeareas,suchasinNewZealand,theincidenceofskinandrespiratoryaller- gies increased as much as40% inthepopulation [5].Thus,thecancer andallergy incidenceparalleleachother,whereasinfectiousdiseaseshavedecreasedinindustri- alizedcountries.Fromanepidemiologicalpointofview, thedecreasedparasiteand bacterialburden mayindirectlycorrelatewiththeincreasingcurves ofallergyand cancer,beingthusinaccordancewiththeso-calledhygienehypothesis.Thistheory linkstherecentlowerparasiteandmicrobeburdentoaberrantimmuneresponsesor failureofimmunemechanisms[6,7].However,ifallergiesandmalignanciesboth B E.Jensen-Jarolim( ) IPP-DepartmentofPathophysiology,CenterofPathophysiology,InfectiologyandImmunology, MedicalUniversityofVienna,Vienna,Austria e-mail:[email protected] M.L.Penichet,E.Jensen-Jarolim(eds.),CancerandIgE, 1 DOI10.1007/978-1-60761-451-7_1,(cid:2)C SpringerScience+BusinessMedia,LLC2010
