This book does not pretend to be a definitive biography of
Cavour, a duplication in English of what Rosario Romeo is doing
in Italian. Such an enterprise would require not one but several
volumes, each many times the number of pages allotted for works
in the Rulers and Statesmen of the World Series. The present
study, while examining the Count’s life and policies, seeks to con¬
centrate upon those aspects of his career and character not gen¬
erally stressed in English accounts. At the same time, by utilizing
some of the recent historiographical findings and conclusions, it
aims to provide an updated and objective analysis of this maker
of modern Italy. The notes and references, it will be seen, have
been kept to a minimum.
In the course of writing this book I had recourse to the facilities
of a number of libraries, archives, and institutes in Italy and this
country and am particularly indebted to the gracious and helpful
staffs of the Library of the Chamber of Deputies, the Vatican
Archives, the Library of Congress, and the New York Public
Library. This project was encouraged and assisted by a number of
individuals. I should especially like to acknowledge the aid of
Miss Cipriana Scelba of the American Commission for Cultural
Exchange with Italy. Her letters of introduction opened many
doors in Italy and facilitated my research. Other figures provided
inspiration and advice, including John Zeender of the Catholic
University of America, Rosario Romeo of the University of Rome,
Robert Trisco, Editor of the Catholic Historical Review, and
Hans Trefousse of Brooklyn College. The shortcomings of this
volume are, of course, my own. Finally, this work would not have
been written but for the patience and assistance of my wife,
Rosina.
