As well as a celebration, it is also an opportunity to look back on a century as a leading organisation in language assessment and review our achievements in terms of development, meeting the needs of learners and our commitment to excellence. Since our first exam, Cambridge English: Proficiency, also known as Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), was created in 1913, global travel and technology have fundamentally changed our view of the world, creating opportunities for international study, business and migration previously undreamt of. This has fuelled a growing demand for English, and our exams have developed to meet the practical needs and aspirations of learners around the world. From just one exam, our range of assessments has grown to encompass learners of all abilities – from the very youngest taking their first steps in English to the most proficient, with specialist qualifications for business and the professions. We have also developed a comprehensive choice of qualifications for teachers. Each of our exams is developed, produced and tested using the latest research and methodology from the largest dedicated research facility of its kind. As part of the University of Cambridge, our search for excellence is matched by our desire to contribute to language education and to the knowledge and understanding of language assessment. We therefore share much of our research with academics, teachers and other language education professionals. Anniversaries are also a time to look to the future, and in the coming years we expect to see further demand for English for study, international business and creating standards for professional competence. We work closely with governments around the world on delivering educational projects, and as English becomes increasingly important to children’s futures, we anticipate collaborating with even more countries on programmes for primary education. Our exams have helped tens of millions of people to achieve their ambitions for work, study and travel.
