However, there are many topics that deserve particular attention. Thus, a number of workshops and accompanying events are co-located with the BIS Conference. Work- shops give researchers the possibility to share preliminary ideas and initial experi- mental results and to discuss research hypotheses from a specific area of interest. BIS Workshops are an ideal place to present research ideas. Three workshops and two accompanying events took place during the 20th BIS Conference. We were proud to host well-known workshops such as AKTB (ninth edition) and BITA (eighth edition) as well as a new initiative, SESSISE. Each work- shop focused on a different topic: knowledge-based business information systems (AKTB), challenges and current state of business and IT alignment (BITA), and sus- tainable energy systems, smart infrastructures, and smart environments (SESSISE). Additionally, BIS hosted a Doctoral Consortium. It was organized in a workshop formula, thus the best papers from this event are included in the book. Moreover, all authorshadthepossibilitytodiscusstheirideasonPhDthesesandresearchworkwith a designed mentor. Together with the BIS Conference, the Second Polish National Congress on Information Systems took place. It was an event organized by the Polish Scientific Society for Business Informatics addressed to academia and businesses that conduct research in the area of business informatics. The event included a keynote speech, a discussion panel, and several regular and poster sessions. The best articles presented during the congress were then invited for publication in the volume. Theworkshopauthorshadthechancetopresenttheirresultsandideasinfrontofa well-focusedaudience;thusthediscussionprovidedtheauthorswithnewperspectives and directions for further research. Based on the feedback received, authors had the opportunity to edit the workshop articles for the current publication. The volume contains 25 articles that are extended versions of papers accepted for BIS workshops. The volume ends with an invitedpaper presented during a specialsession of the main BIS Conference: “The Evolution of Business Information Systems and the BIS.” In total, there were 74 submissions for all mentioned events. Based on the reviews, the respective workshop chairs accepted 25 in total, yielding an acceptance rate of 34%. We would like to express our thanks to everyone who made the BIS 2017 work- shopssuccessful.Firstofall, ourworkshopschairs, membersoftheworkshopProgram Committees, authors of submitted papers, and finally all workshop participants.
