And I'd despise the ones who gave up.” Abraham Maslow When it comes to wilderness survival we oft en focus on equipment and skills, ignoring the one factor that oft en makes all the diff erence between those who survive and those who don’t. Sheer bloody-minded determination to keep pushing forward, regardless of the diffi culties, will always give you a fi ghting chance. Giving up and feeling sorry for yourself will, unless you get very lucky, result in the worst possible outcome. I’ve noticed the same philosophical approach can be applied to many other aspects of our lives. As the world lurches from one crisis to another it’s never been more important for us as individuals and as a community to maintain that momentum to keep moving forward decisively. We are living through ‘interesting times’ as the old Chinese curse put it. A constant barrage of bad news stories can overwhelm us and make us feel powerless to do anything to improve our situation. Of course, there are many situations over which we have no control, but there are also many things we can do to help weather any storms. The fi rst and most important is to maintain our health; without good physical and mental health everything becomes more diffi cult. Keeping fi t doesn’t have to involve expensive gym membership or extreme endurance events. Regular walks and stretching exercises are better than nothing. I like to make my exercise relevant to the activities I enjoy, so when I’m training, I oft en wear a backpack fi lled with the kit I plan to use. This helps keep back and leg muscles ready for expeditions and spontaneous adventures. The idea of spending time and energy at the gym seems like a complete waste to me, so I try to plan my exercise around the real work: splitting and stacking fi rewood or moving earth and gravel. Nothing beats a day of hard physical labour to help you sleep soundly. Being physically fi t makes it far easier to maintain our mental health too. Cutting down on junk foods and alcohol (and other) intakes are also signifi cant steps to improve overall health. Spending time in nature can also be hugely benefi cial for our wellbeing, so get out in the woods and surround yourself with nature at every opportunity. Finally, remove negative infl uences from your life. This could include toxic people who drain your energy and reduce your self-esteem, or the endless barrage of depressing news that create division and negativity. Choose your information sources wisely, and remember if a news item creates an emotional reaction within you, there’s a good chance someone intended it to have that eff ect. Now with summer upon us I’ve been busy running bushcraft courses and leading foraging walks on the Gower Peninsula. The Welsh coastline has always provided an abundance of wild foods, and right now we’re fi lling our foraging baskets with wild coastal greens such as marsh samphire and sea purslane, as well as the national delicacy of Wales, laverbread, made from the seaweed Porphyra umbilicalis. Some people can’t stand the stuff . I’d happily eat it by the bucketful. With two outstanding events planned for the end of July, the Bushcraft Show and the Global Bushcraft Symposium, I’m hoping very much that our paths will cross. For those unable to attend, please send an email (andrew@bushcraft magazine.com) to let me know what you’ve been up to with your bushcraft adventures. Until our paths cross next, I wish you all the very best in your outdoor adventures. WIN Show 2022 A Family Weekend Ticket (2 adults & up to 3 children) including camping, worth around £400.
