" I may add that both at Bury and at Woodbridge bombs have fallen and done great damage within a few yards of the printing shops in which these three volumes were being printed. SECT. II. POPULATION. The population of Bury St Edmunds as given in the first five Census returns is thus : 1801. 1811. 1821. 1831. 1841. 1851. St Mary ... 4090 4206 5230 5494 6269 7232 St James ... 3565 3780 4769 5942 6269 6668 7655 7986 9999 11436 12538 13900 The exact equality of the two parishes in 1841 is curious and makes one half suspect a mistake. But all the above returns lie outside my boundary, which is the year 1800. It may be as well therefore to try and see what was the population from 1560 to 1800, the time which is actually represented by these volumes. During that time Bury consisted of two parishes, St Mary's and St James', which seem always to have been about equal in size, St Mary's a little the biggest. As there was no official numbering of the people before 1801 it is not easy to give the exact population of any place before that year. One can only estimate it more or less vaguely from various returns which were made for other purposes. I will estimate it from such returns as I chance to have before me. Bury St Edmunds. A.D. 1377.
