International perspectives in research and prac tice (Einarsen et al., 2003). The book soon became a highly cited source of knowledge for this new and burgeoning field of research and practice. Responding to the rapid growth in international interest and research in the field, now on a global scale, a new second edition was published in 2011, which offered comprehensive updates of core chapters plus a number of new chapters addressing issues previously not examined in the 2003 edition. The third and present edition has, in addition to a new title in line with its current content, no fewer than eight completely new chapters (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 18, 21) together with a collection of much-revised and expanded chapters from the two previous editions. Thus, Chapters  1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 15, 17, 19 and 20 were also part of the two previous editions, although comprehensively revised and updated as state-of-the- art overviews. Chapters from the first and second editions not retained in the third and current editions still stand on their own and represent important contributions to the field and are well worth a read (see Einarsen et al., 2003, 2011). Systematic research into bullying and harassment at work, primarily of a non-physical nature, as distinct from sexual and racial harassment, started in the early 1990s, expanded in the late 1990s, and really took off after the publication of our edited book, particularly in Europe, Australia and North America. ix
