McGrath, MD What is The Mahoning Valley Medical Society? ‘Spring has finally sprung after another tough Ohio winter. Things are beginning to look a litle different. Trees are budding leaves, flowers are beginning to bloom, the grass is green and growing, and the potholes are| slowly being filed with patch. if you have paid realty close attention, you have noticed that the name of the medical society looks different now tool We are no longer the County Medical Society, but the Valley Medical a Society. This change was an abvious need in the new ago of the OSMA r {and the needs of our local Community. We now represent more of the / valley by the addition of Trumbull County and potentially other neighboring counties in the years fo come. This was a logistical decision as the geographic districts of the OSMA have changed in recent years and the needs of the counties| are requiring more organization and, hence, more financial backing to support our needs. Therefore, our Executive Director and our Council made some decisions to move our organization into the future with added sirength and viability, Part of what | want to relay to the membership today is what the Society is to each member. First and foremost, the society 's YOUR organization. It exists for you and your patients, the doctors and citizens of the valley. Itis a political acton center for the needs of our local community and local doctors. Its @ sounding board for your thoughts and ideas of how to improve the medical care in the valley. itis a safe piace for a community member to call wth concorns about the practice of medicine and a safe place for doctors to voice their personal and professional concems. its an ‘organization that monitors our local access to care to make sure patients in the valey can receive the care they need ight here in the valley. Itis a council that meets monthly to discuss any and all issues related to the running ofthe organization, sponsored events, new member benefits, and complaints/concoms from the community or doctors. tis an annual meeting whore we como together to celebrate and recognize the Distinguished Physician and the 50 years in medicine award recipients Soin summary, the Society is yours, itis for you and your patients, itis politcal, safe, and actively ‘meets, it listens to you, il acts for you, it recognizes and celebrates you, and therefore it benefits you. | encourage everyone fo gel more involved with the society. ILis here for all physicians in the valley, private practice docs, employed docs, retired docs, residents, fellows, and medical students. Please| ask a council member about how to got involved or about current topics being discussed in council meetings. Don't hesitate to bring any concerns to the council's attention as we are here to help our ‘members with most any problems related to the practice of medicine or access to care. Please read| through any emails or mailings we may send as they are related to opportunities for you to help us ‘and our community. We thank you for your continued membership and support of our local, grassroots organization and hope to continue to grow and work together with all of you in the many years to comel From the President by Lyn E. Yakubov, MD Leaving a Legacy “What is t with kids these days" You know that you have said this or that you have at least thought once or twice—especially in regard to the younger practtioners ‘and students around you in medicine. However, we baby-boomers- ike to think that | am speaking to the major of you ‘oul there (Baby Boomers 1945-1954)—are one of the most-egocentic generations in American History Between 11960 and 2010 the growth of enitement spending inthe U.S. was exponential In 1940 federal government transfers to individuals amounted fo under one-sixth of tolal U.S. government expenditures. Between 1960 and 2010, the share of eniements in govemment spencing at all levels jumped from 19 percent to 43 percent.
